If you take a gig or get a mission to find a particular person aboard a particular ship, instead of wandering around until you stumble across them, having a contact in Admin could let you ask them to ID the ship's location as a favor. Alternately, you could pay the Clerk in KLEG Commercial a "small fee" for the same data.

Or have the PDA provide a proximity-based location tracker, so that items and NPCs can be shown on the screen when attempting to track similar items / target NPCs down.
We already have something similar to alarms when we wanted to wire them up. The alarms would be highlighted while everything else becomes dim.
