gonna spitball my idea for the avian contest for later use:
Since Parasect is based off of a bug under the effects of a cordyceps like infection, I assume that at the end of a Parasect's life cycle then do the same as cordyceps infected ants, which is climb to a high place and get eaten by a bird for the fungus to spread through the bird's droppings. But, what if instead of ingest the fungus and later pass it, what if the bird got infected with the cordyceps thingy from the Parasect? A bird that doesn't have Paras and Parasect in its natural habitat, a bird that isn't used to interacting with the fungus, encounters it. Thus, Parasect/Staraptor, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk please don't take my idea.

Claiming them as your own is indeed where the problem lies. Everyone uses the same set of sprites for most Pokémon, so we know where they come from and people don't take credit for them. If I took, say, Tenedranox's custom Mantine sprite and made a fusion with it and claimed I'd made it from scratch, then I'm clearly lying.
Being able to use the in-game sprites and the Smogon project sprites is like an unwritten rule, because we're all on the same page as to where they came from. But anything else should be given credit.
