I have learned to use piskel but before that I only used ms paint I only used gimp to remove the white background

Now I also use gimp to sketch then I shrink it down to sprite

It’s really solid if you want to animate

Compared to ms paint it’s only lightly less intuitive to use but it has more customization than ms paint, like layers, and canvas settings

Also if you import something into piskel to use as a reference for example, if shows you the color palette of what you imported in that you can customize

If I control what goes against what to a certain degree, that's just catering. Not how we do things

The "good" sprites can get eliminated early, and so can the ""bad"" ones, I shuffle the bracket, check for self-elims, and that's it

I don't put any control into the bracket, because that can (and most def will) have an impact on the winner, I leave it up to fate.

You're new to contests here, I understand that, but that's how it's always been, and always will be.
