USUM were NOT identical... The story was different and the focal points clearly were not the same.
Sun and Moon focused on Lillie and Gladion with their mother losing her mind and throwing everything aside for her ultra beasts, even her children. Her losing her mind once Nihilego's venom took effect and being a spoilt brat.
Ultra games had more focus on Hau and Guzma, as well as Lusamine being FAR more manipulative without the Nihilego venom making her go ABSOLUTELY INSANE. Without it, she's not "de-fanged", she has her cool together more and is actually pretending to be a hero to do good by capturing/defeating Necrozma. Which, of course, is a bunch of garbage because she's still obsessed with the ultra beasts and this is just some nifty excuse to get her precious beasts. It's even shown that Guzma is still so far up her butt in dedication and that man is one of the few you wouldn't expect to be up someone's butt in respecting them.

If you wanna gripe about nearly identical games, use Platinum as a far better example. The same face syndrome of identical gameplay and story was real there, but how dare anyone criticise Sinnoh right? Especially with the "precious remakes" on the way (no, they're not)
