It was supposed to be a black jester cat with a white pawn on its chest named Pessant, and its white counter part would have the neck frill instead around its waist and it would be a white cat with a black pawn
Because the idea of the evolution came from chess pieces
The middle evolution would be a rook, and the final evolution would have been a king and queen respectively
Honestly, because of Meowstic, I felt like a part of my design actually made it into the game. I know that's not true but the similarities between the two were uncanny and it was really funny to see
At the time I was bouncing with the idea of him actually wielding the pawn, and then the rook, and then a king/queen staff but someone told me something that made a lot of sense.
Pokemon tools are things you can always find in the wild. Cubone has a bone, Timburr has a piece of wood, etc etc. All those things can just be picked up. Where would it find a giant pawn? Would it be born with it? What if it lost it?
Because of that I stopped working on it, but I still have this old design which I enjoyed.
Vxnnu posting the chess piece made me think of this little guy.

I see. then @void maple if what Gnose showed is really soft shading, then it's not nessary the best kind of shading. in a pixel art style it would ruin the effect as an example. And it can give an unpleasant plasticine look if overdone. sometime, you are better of with a clean shadow demarcation (as if you are doing a vectoriel illustraction. sticker style)

the issue is that its inconsistently shaded, in some areas soft in others not so much
given that one for example (at least i hope it does) is consistently shaded soft, therefor doesnt look blurry

It's better than the other one for sure. the shading work well in that one as it give a metalic look to the all thing. but this doesn't look "soft" to me as there is a clear demarcation between each color. no gradient really. (which is a good thing in my opinion here)
If you look at the one SteamPunko posted every patch of color have some sort of outline that is a color in between the inside and outside. (I am guesing that is what he call soft shading)

@fervent meteor Not her face. but part of he head jewls. the top of her jewl is clearly in contact with her cheek so I would imagine that part of the brightest parts (the pure white reflection) shouldn't be as bright. it's kind of odd to me that there is pure white triangles directly against her cheek if that make any sens. (same for the left part of the very top of the jewl).
