speaking of riichi i have not settled on a good translation for riichi
"kama" is a very tantalising candidate.
pros:
- literal translation of "reach"
- taunting. playful mayhaps
- plays into "kama wawa" very well
cons:
- has nothing to do with 立直
- confusing. way too versatile of a word ("kama kama"? really?)
other considerations:
- "sinpin"; would be great but already used for the word "hand" (手牌) and monzen 門前
- "awen"; its ok? already used for シャンテン count

this is so impractical
on one hand i dont want to use nimisin/nimajuna for the numbers
or some other nasin nasa
on the other hand. its numbers. they have actual meaningful distinction value
it wld look better in sitelen pona
mạt chược việt năm sending me on a wild goose chase of random shit
(still need to edit the other tiles, but kulupu pi leko sitelen is done)
woah
really nice
no idea how u make it so nice lmao maybe im j cursed w nvr being able to do anything art well
learning how to mod this game just for musi Mason lol
lol
hm
reference btw
戦 ("battle") - tenpo
場 ("field?") - sike
局 ("round") - kipisi
its clunky but idk what else to use
oh why is that
wld putting the namako in the luka be nicer? idk
some weird depth map thingy
ni a
oh yeah i guess to get the 3d feel maybe
may or may not have gotten sidetracked by a separate project haha
will resume tomorrow
im switching from google sheets to google docs which im less familiar with so time may be suli
updaye: all that's left is the sike tiles
woah... the palisa luka namako is so cool

current major roadblock: i dont know in what order to talk about the rules
theres so much jargon interconnected with each other i cannot just introduce them all at once

the four wind tiles lexicalised r alr p fucked up in its own right
no word for left cannot describe chi properly despairfade
oh what do you use to play mahjong
the footage is from SEGA MJ!
at least the playback of it
nowadays i only play on mahjong soul
ah yeah, that's the only way i can play mahjong online
yea its one of the only online mahjong games that are localised for intl audiences i think
probably bcz its developed by a chinese team
i hate that there's a billion "mahjong solitaire" (the tile matching) apps
true,,,

my fu counting still bad so i cant tell if its mangan or not 😔
esun wawa (you pay 1000 points to strengthen your hand)
kind of weird to announce "esun" when ur reaching tho lmao

i use lanpan twice in this translation

a. "melding"
aaa
tan seme. msa
nnn
uuu nvr heard of it
its a meld-making card game from south america
essentially make sequences of playing cards according to certain rules. but you can only "go out" aka. win. if you've made a canasta throughout the game. which has some similar vibes to yaku
but there's like a million rummy-style card games that are all like that

nanpa wan la kala ike en monsuta
riichi idea:
awen, because you're locking in your hand
awen works
i do use awen for “wait” several times but the actual term i chose for waiting is “kute” so its probably fine
me when i place a tile down sideways:
I INVOKE THE POWER OF INERTIA
IT IS MY DUTY TO PROTECT THE KING
initial draft la i used "awen" for this
but to be honest thinking about it its not an important terminology
yeah, ive never heard that before lol
as if explaining tenpai is a simple thing in the first place lmao
its very common if you watch like Actual Real Life Commentated Mahjong Competitions
but like
overall i dont think its that important?
unless real life mahjong competitions in toki pona is gonna be a real thing
which i highly doubt
that actually sounds fun to watch, im gonna look for some

(the commentators get annoying sometimes)
seems more of 'poka'
yea
just wanna make sure i understnad this correctly:
Tsumo (draw to win): luka wawa
Ron (steal to win): lanpan wawa
Pon/Chi (stealing to meld): moku?
yes yes
im getting a bit lazy with my editing lol
pon is moku sama
chi is moku linja
kan is moku suli
or just moku works tbh
wait no it doesnt. mokus have priorities
or hierarchy idk what the correct word is
that awen is really awesome btw
i need to change awen tbh, looks different from the rest now
moku sama and lanpan wawa in action
honitsu haku toitoi - 5fan mangan
in what situation would "draw" be used
daburon?
afaik games that end with no winner are just continued until there is a winner
and if there are no daburon rules then 頭はね is used
leko taso la leko luka tu wan li lon. leko ni ale la sina o kama jo e leko wan. kin la, kule wan la sina o kama jo e leko tu. ni la kulupu Taso Sewi (kulupu Kokusimuso, Sisanjo) li lon.
fuck this translation honestly good god
i'll think about it
snksndndnm
when tiles run out and no one wins, it says DRAW and then continues until there's a winner. it's basically just saying "lol no more tiles"
ohhh ryukyoku
got it
okay thinking about it draw makes sense
ryukyoku... i dont know how to translate that
a direct translation of "telo" is tempting but thats stupid i thinl
yeah ryuukyoku
there is still (possible) exchange of points at the end of ryuukyoku
yeah
which is going to be hell to describe in toki pona
lol, waking up at 3 am to discuss mahjong, i should go back to sleep
o lape
apparently, yeah
also it's awesome there's a whole riichi wiki
yeah just found that out as well
its interesting because as far as im aware riichi mahjong is the only variant to keep the wangpai
(probs bcz theyre the only variant with doras)
menzen... hm....

i think the better way to think of ippatsu despite its official definition is "being able to tsumo or ron before discarding another tile on your turn after you have called riichi" instead of "tsumo or ron within one cycle of turns after having called riichi"
i feel like this could be a better description because
- describing turns, cycles, rounds, and games in toki pona sucks ass. sike all the way
- discarding tiles is the key indicator that your turn has ended
- probably makes describing 一発消し (pon/chi-ing to remove ippatsu) easier?
nasin linja pona -> nasin nanpa pona ("nanpa pona")
i forgot the more important part of pinfu is that its all numbers and not that its all sunzis
funny
一盃口 - linja sama pi kule sama ("poki linja")
嶺上開花 - luka sin wawa tan nasin suli ("sin wawa")
槍槓 - lanpan wawa tan kama suli ("lanpan suli")
海底摸月 - luka wawa pi leko pini ("luka pini wawa")
河底撈魚 - lanpan wawa pi leko pini ("lanpan pini wawa")
that should be all 1 fan yakus done
im a bit iffy on 一盃口
for context 一盃口 is complete when you have two of the same chis (straights) in your concealed hand
(e.g. 123s / 123s / CCC / EE / 57p - 6p Ron)
一盃口 is invalidated when any tiles are opened (i.e. monzen is broken)
(e.g. 123s / 123s / EE / #CCC / 57p - 6p Ron = no 一盃口)
三色同順 - linja sama pi kule ale ("linja kule ale")
789k 789p 789t JJ LL - L lanpan
sina ken nasin e linja kepeken leko sike kepeken leko palisa kepeken leko sitelen
sina nasin e linja pi nanpa sama kepeken leko ni ale la, kulupu Linja Kule Ale li lon li pana e wawa 2
taso, sina moku e leko la, ni li pana e wawa 1 taso
i think this is an Alright explanation of 食い下がり
would "sina moku la" be better than "sina moku e leko la"? i don't know
i think in the context of this document, it can be assumed you're talking about leko mokuing
so proably sina moku is totally fine
tpt mahjong players taking a bite of their sandwich and calling a win (
maybe i should have a few lines that state like "from this point forward all references to X refers to this unless specified" but i feel like a. that might be unnecessary b. i can't describe that effectively in toki pona (

really dont like this translation
i'd mull over it but i also don't want to do that
surprise revival
i had a sudden revitalised interest in board games again and decided to waste a couple more days completing the translation. i have a few more areas to cover before im satisfied with it & i might get it proofchecked
things i want to cover
- more rules (kuikae, sakizuke, ariari etc.)
- more jargon (there is so much jargon.)
- etiquette and penalties (chombo, cheating)
- 3p (maybe i'll split this into its own page?)
- local rules (")
things i want to work on in the future
- hong kong mahjong (gau zoeng)
- chinese standard mahjong (guo biao)
- malsing mahjong (3p)

man, i havent mahjonged in a good while

(my message sent twice but when i deleted it both copies got deleted)
yakuza kiwami 2, mostly
but i do have majsoul on my phone (havnt touched in a long time)
random thought but what if a toki pona mahjong set had not the tiles numbered from one to nine but
have them numbered symmetrically
1 open
2 open lili
3 open suli
4 open meso
5 meso
6 pini meso
7 pini suli
8 pini lili
9 pini
or just
wan open, tu open, wan tu open, tu tu open, five is meso, and then repeat mirrored for pini
i was going off the cantonese & eng pronounciation
but i am aware [masan] is also a good alt
this is good but in my translation i do already use the words open and pini for east and west
its hard to shove all this in one screenshot lmao
pardon the piss shit quality
i do intend on releasing the mahjong translation here so im using chrys' account as a vessel
the actual chrys hasnt visited me in a while
