the short version is that i found a public avatar in VRChat, very like the one i'm using today! but it was wayyy more crungly, you can see it in a handful of the pics in this thread and in my older lesson videos
a few months after i started using it (may -> august 2022), i decided to commission the fancier, cleaner version that you see in most of my videos
the fact that i found and really liked the starman avatar was by pure luck, and i could very well have ended up with a totally different avatar if i hadn't found that one. case in point, the only actual design change between the crungly one and my current one is the bowtie! i felt like it fit.

that said, longer continuation: i got the fancier starman avatar ready for just after sptp 2022 (at some point when i told this story i misremembered it as being for sptp 2022 but i was actually a bit late), and it turned out to be so popular that @upbeat shoal made me my first fanart in september 2022, a little over a month later, and @unreal ice (not in this server) made me a pile more including my current avatar in mid december 2022.

during this time i was kinda sorta aware of how popular the starman was; i became more recognizable in vrc meetups than the founder of that community and that was actually kinda contentious between us, but the star wasn't a choice i made with the intent to be popular or recognizable; i just genuinely liked the style and look and wanted to keep using it. simultaneously with that, i was making toki pona lesson videos out of the lessons i was already doing in vrchat, and those were becoming popular/well known in the community too. these two things combined, largely on accident, into funny teacher starguy who is very recognizable and marketable. i just wanted to do good toki pona teaching, and wanted to be in an avatar i liked while i did it.

that said, if i hadn't found starman, the different avatar would be some kind of robot or wizard.
