it's incredibly cool too because there's a bunch of stuff i just could not have done without the help of the community
the thumbnails were a volunteer addition by jan Keten (nyxoom) (i pay for them now because it's worth it)
jan Sa volunteered to do the subtitles and they're fantastic
the idea to do recorded VR stuff was because of fuopy's awesome work building the TPVR community
and from that too, he encouraged me super hard to teach and gave me a space to do it routinely so i got better
the map i record on is from jan Iseja, made for suno pi toki pona, and the chalkboard became an iconic part of my lesson series
the site i put my written lessons on was originally set up like jan Lentan's static site generator
the starman avatar i lucked into but i fuopy recommended me somebody to commission it from and it came out Perfectly
the lesson content has been refined time and time again by conversations, both tpt and lon nasin, with kili, jan Ke Tami, jan Tepo, jan Lakuse, jan Olipija, and so many others i couldn't possibly recall all of
also the help from jan Ke Tami and jan Kasape to help identify errors in these lessons, cause they're not always perfect!
not to mention those spreading these lessons around and getting more people to look at them!
it's a lot more than just high production value
i recognize my contribution in the editing, my voice, and the time and effort i've put in to get things right
that is my avatar up in the video at the end of the day :P
but i cannot possibly mean this more when i say this work is only here because of this phenomenal community encouraging me and helping me to do even better work
and i could not have done it alone.
ok that reminds me, please end off your video series with a "special thanks" section
that is 100% the plan already!
olin a
the real learn toki pona series was the friends we made along the way
I'd like to ask something about your latest video on anu
Usually, anu seme is used to mark a question: sina pali anu seme - do you work? / are you working?
If I'd say: sina pali anu lape -- does this only read: you are working or sleeping
or could this also be understood as a question: are you working or sleeping?
or do I still need to add anu seme: sina pali anu lape anu seme?
Seems that anu seme adds another option to answer. While sina pali anu lape? could give only two options to answer.
Generally, no, this is not considered a question on its own, it's just a statement: "You work or sleep."
There are some speakers who do form questions like this, and so they rely on inflection or punctuation to convey that the statement is a question, but that is fairly rare to my knowledge.
In addition to that, in my experience, these speakers are newer to the language and not used to forming a question grammatically in Toki Pona.
You will see multiple anu used in addition to anu seme to form a set of options to a question, like so:
sina pali anu lape anu seme?
This is also relatively infrequent, but it's valid in the way anu is commonly used and in forming a question grammatically with anu seme.
The trouble with anu is that answering any questions regarding its use requires recognizing that there's almost no consensus on how it works, a a
But, and I'll get to this in a future lesson, there are generally 3 ways question forming works:
verb doubling with ala, sina pali ala pali? forms a yes or no question
ending a statement with anu seme (or technically placing it at the end of any part of speech, but by far most commonly at the end of the sentence entirely), sina pali anu seme? forms a yes or no question as well
and putting seme in place of any content word, sina pali seme? forms an open ended question where the respondent fills in the blank!
I am familiar with this concept. It's totally fine.
I personally have the feeling that anu seme adds the answer option "or what?" making it an "open question":
Do you work or what? ... so the answer could be: I eat
do you work or sleep or what? ... the answer could still be: I eat
I was wondering if there is a way to give a certain set of answer options and not adding one open
Just experimenting:
sina pali anu lape la, seme li lon? - you work or sleep: what is true?
Ye, that's true as well! An anu seme question could be open ended as well. I call it a yes or no question because it is generally answered in the same way as an x ala x question.
I've heard some speakers say it conveys expectation in the answer, as if the statement part of the question is expected to be true. Personally, I most often use it to ask questions in larger, more complex sentences :P
If you wanna get even more technical, any question could be open ended; the x ala x questions don't necessarily have to refer to the doubled verb as the affirmed information, it just is grammatically! "sina pali ala pali e tomo poka?" "ala. mi pali e tomo sin." The answerer can provide any information they want about the question.
And, I would interpret your suggested question as "When you work or sleep, what's happening?"
I definitely encourage exploration, bc there's absolutely room for toki pona to grow and change over time
(It would be legit cool to come back 5+ years from now and find my lessons totally outdated)
But always be wary of others interpretations! a a
If you wanted a question with an explicit set of options more than a binary as in x ala x, you might wanna try this:
kili suwi en kili pi suwi nasa en pan la sina moku e seme?
Thank you for this long answer. I see the point.
I think there is even more possible with spoken TP. It makes a big difference if you just read a sentence or if you would sit in front of me. Me staring sternly at you: sina pali anu lape ... anu seme? you might have the feeling that there is definitely no third option a a a
I like your last example how to probably give a set of options. helps a lot!
Oh yeah, spoken TP tends to be much more fluid with the grammar than written TP. Which is fun! I don't have any strong examples off hand, but that's how I've felt when speaking tp anyway :P
Otherwise, glad to help :)
idk if i agree
like people might be more fluid in general but not grammatically
like nothing in the syntax changes
as for anu for questions itโs pu to do โmi wile sona e ni: sina moku e kili anu pan?โ and the like, so feel free to use that construction
on its own a lot of people on this server dislike using it on its own but eh itโs not terrible and as jan Kekan San mentioned, because thereโs no consensus on how anu is used you like can use it like that and if people complained after you decided to use it with all of the nuance youโve just learned about, idk it wouldnโt be their place to do so
fwiw i have seen it used a lot

I wish there were any people in my local area I could talk to face to face in TP. I keep encouraging my friends to learn TP ๐

pu isn't gospel, it's not a lipu sewi, and it doesn't reflect the usage of anyone but Sonja
still, i also think it's weird when people don't like using anu for questions
but anu is itself weird, so i can't blame em a a a
hm now, I am really curious... What's written on page 80?
a bunch of famous quotes
@solar valley ni
ni en ijo ante, a a
to be clear, i don't think it's weird!
for myself, i genuinely like and prefer when a given sentence is unambiguously a question or not by the grammar alone, without needing inflection/punctuation/further questioning to inform that. it's a really fun property of toki pona and lets me be more free with my inflection and vocal expression, as well as my punctuation. i've used ? before to indicate a statement i am uncertain about but not asking a question about either, for example. there are statements i've made that, if interpreted as a question, become not at all what i intended.
this is also why i avoid statements like: mi ken ala ken e ni -> i am unable to allow this; altho these don't really come up anyway bc they're silly lol
but that's why i do it!
as i noted before tho, i don't see/hear a lot of speakers use anu alone to form questions, and most of those speakers are newer to the language as well
it'll get a mention in my questions video in any case
It's the "famous quotations"
... anupu
#9583 ๐ฃ In "Toki Pona: The Language of Good", the word "anu" is defined, but not explained, outside of its role in "anu seme" type ... questions.
"anu" remains a debatable subject when it comes to it being able to form questions on its own, without the "seme" or the "[predicate] ala [predicate]" format. pu only gives 2 sentences containing "anu" without "anu seme":
mi kute e mije anu meli.
(answers to Lesson 7) as a translation to: "I hear a man or a woman."
wile sona nanpa wan li ni: ale li pona anu ike?
(famous quotations) as a translation to the quote attributed to Albert Einstein: "The most fundamental question we can ever ask ourselves is whether or not the universe we live in is friendly or hostile"
Notes:
- While the first use of "anu" is presented as a statement, "anu" might still act as a kind of choice, and could in some way still work as a disguised question
- While the second use of "anu" is presented as a question, it's not clear if "anu" is responsible - or solely responsible - for forming a question. The "wile sona" might do some heavy lifting
- The second use of "anu" is also not a question in the English sentence (although a question format arises out of the reformulation in toki pona)
(note: this is something I wrote up, and might not be the best - it was meant as a draft that I never managed to improve on)
hey i didnt call you out specifically :p
but yea i getcha
that's a very thorough explanation of the quote!
it addresses one of the thoughts i had when i read the original statement, that it wasn't even stated as a question in the original english, so it may not have been intended as a question in the toki pona
who knows, a a
i try to not think too hard about the esoteric intricacies of grammar, and instead use what feels intuitive and makes logical sense to me, even if it's "technically incorrect" (like using anu for questions)
this is something that i actively avoid to some extent, because i don't wanna just speak english with a coat of paint
i try to avoid things in my intuition because that intuition is often informed by english, a a
well yea, i try to do what feels intuitive in toki pona, and i'm sure it's impacted by other languages i speak to some extent
but stuff like "anu can't form a question on its own" feels kinda pointless
because even if it doesnt, it does show the speaker being uncertain
which the listener can then fill out and explain, even if it isnt technically a question
anu only covers rhethorical questions /thought out of nowhere that isn't meant to be serious in any way
same with the "wile sona"
if i say, "mi wile sona e ni: sina pona anu ike." it's not technically a question, but it shows uncertainty and is a prime opportunity for the listener to hop in and elaborate
mm partial disagree, you're ignoring some uses of anu
ex., soweli ni li ken moku e kasi anu kala, this animal can eat plants or fish
but like, ye, otherwise sure
(also, this is an example out of my lesson and it's notable bc it's a valid use of anu but also identical to using e)
Well, as Einstein was German, the quote goes like this:
Unsere wichtigste Entscheidung ist, ob wir das Universum fรผr einen freundlichen oder feindlichen Ort halten.
"Our most important decision is, whether we consider the universe a friendly or a hostile place."
Not a real question here
yea, but it got rephased as a question in toki pona
the primary want-to-know is this: everything is good or bad?
i'm sure you could translate it without making it a question, but that's not the route that jan Sonja went with
mi toki kepeken nasin ni lon tenpo
is the quote an explicit example for how to form a question? Or is it... just a quote?
does it matter too much
it is a quote translated into toki pona, which happens to have a question due to the rephrasing
it's not explicitly used as an example of how to make questions
if you can express something that is a question in english a certain way in toki pona to fill the same role then why not label it as a question
okay, thank you
maybe it's not appropriate for me to comment too much about it, as I've learnt TP just half a year ago...
but I deal with such problems in my real world job, so I am quite interested into it.
Thanks everyone for the discussion and their input. I think I am able to come to my own conclusion now ๐
Be confident in yourself!
A lot of speakers here started exploring and sharing their understanding of the language before they were fully confident in the language.
The worst that happens is you're moving against the crowd, and that's not a big deal- nobody's gonna bite your head off about it! We all just wanna have fun with the language and do the best we can, a a
In the meantime, I am about to record my next lesson, the second to last!
aw
good luck!
what're your plans for when you're done with the series?
are you just gonna rest for a bit?
modding two times half a dozen servers will keep the star man busy
yea exactly haha, Kekan San does a lot in the community already
fell onto the scene and took the spotlight within a few months
two plans!
- a corrections and thank you video; unsure yet if this will be one or two videos
- a short form explanation of toki pona's grammar to be used as a reference, to go alongside the series. max runtime 20 minutes. think kili's nasin toki but video. I might also upload this as a set of shorts, in addition to one long form video.
after that, the plans are more nebulous, but I wanna do more proper TPT content (and I have a few ideas for what!)
I'd like to make video essays, lmao
if I get around to that, the plan is to release them in both English and Toki Pona, with the English some period of time later. Same editing otherwise
oh yea! you've mentioned essays
more tpt content will be great too! too much stuff about tp, too little in tp
i might get into that and make some stuff too, depending on how motivation treats me
it's less work than it seems, a a
a lot of days pass where there's no mod action for me to do
but, i am only a mod in half a dozen communities, and of those ma pona takes the most time and mtpvr takes the second most
i am trying to figure out how to delegate stuff, a a
but a lot of it i legit just enjoy doing; tptpt is an example of this, it's so cool to see the server speaking toki pona fully
tenpo pi toki pona taso (but i mash all the letters into a useless acronym becasue it's a funny acronym)
aw damn
itโs double tonguing but switch out the the velum for the labias
it took me several seconds to realize you were referring to the physical motion of pronouncing 'tptpt'
i was actually thinking about the "does anu form a question or not" while captioning the video
and i think it doesn't matter to some extent
bc what you say can be a statement
but then the listener might clarify the statement you made
but ofc thats not really garunteed
I feel exactly the same
And arguing that it can't form a question cause of this and that feels pedantic
Cause even if it can't, it still works in context and allows the listener to elaborate
im not saying its a question
it's just like... a unsure statement
like maybe there's some functional overlap
but it's not a true question
Eh I guess
But yea I don't see if it really matters if it's technically a question or not since they play the same-ish role in context
One is asking for an answer and one is uncertain allowing an answer
that was a lot of speaking eeeee
wondering if i should break it into two lessons
i think in editing it'll be more cohesive, but wow that was a lot a a
Well, this was exactly my conclusion.
(I don't need to discuss it, I just want to share my thoughts)
I'd call it explicit questions and implicit questions.
Explicit questions are formed by grammar: X ala X or anu seme
Implicit questions are formed by context. A statement is uncertain and provokes some answer.
ale li pona anu ike. ni li wile sona nanpa wan.
In this example there is an uncertain statement: ale li pona anu ike. The listening person knows by context that it is open for an optional answer, but not mandatory. Same goes with mi wile sona e ni: ale li pona anu ike - two statements: the first about me wanting to know and the second about the uncertain, provoked by anu
ale li pona anu ike anu seme?
Now, it is an explicit question by grammar. The listening person knows by grammar that an answer is required.
As always (not only) in TP, it's about context. Context may rise an implicit question, no explicit form needed.
Well, just my personal thoughts.
i don't like question marking with anu because it relies on tone of voice or written question marks
so you can't express it in sitelen pona
also i've heard it's harder for people whose first language is tonal, to pick up on question marking with tone of voice
i can't evaluate that claim
yeah "tone=question" is a very anglocentric thing
like I forget which but I believe I heard that some languages do downward tone to mark questions
rather than english's rising tone
some dialects of english do downward tone to mark a question
really? (downwards tone)
that oneโs also a rhetorical question though
hmm the downward tone I'm imaging is all rhetorical
like superintendent chalmers saying it
really? (squiggly tone, but not in a mocking way, sort of like a voice crack, but smoother)

or if it's a name, "look, Fucking, what you did"
or to emphasize that it was the listener who did it (this one's much more iffy tho) "look what fucking YOU did!"

I don't use tawa personally

ijo li awen ijo la ona li ante ala li ijo
tenpo wan la, ijo li awen; taso, tenpo sin la, ijo li tawa li awen ala
la ona li kama tawa
ona li kama tawa
ken
i only do preverb tawa cause i know it makes people upset
same with preverb open
oh yeah I have to give you a standing ovation for captioning EVERY video you make
/i say this as a joke but if people didn't push back against these preverbs i wouldn't use them, i only use them cause they are controversial
like good job I think there needs to be more people like this
- they are not all captioned i'm like 90% sure!
- i am not captioning them!
oh I need to talk to that person
@cinder tiger sina wawa tan pana sitelen sina
yes good job jan Sa
jan Sa is credited in the description but i should make that part of the video
only reason that isn't the case is cause my lessons were not Scripted Scripted
they're just kinda read off my written lessons
youtube should give more of an incentive for captioning or buff their existing incentive
here is an exhaustive list of their incentives for captioning content:
wow that is quite the list!!
you can filter for captioned content specifically but you can't filter for non-captioned content
yes, that's the closest thing to an incentive i can think of lmao
actually i lied a little bit there is one real incentive that just isn't stated
youtube is going to attempt to index your content via search and theyll do so with the automated captions
but if you provide your own captions, you can add any keywords you want to this even if they do not appear in the video (cause the relationship of captions to content is not enforced)
so the incentives are now
- if somebody is intentionally looking for captioned content, your video can appear
- you can get your content on google search with optimizing keywords
I love accessibility
sina pona a
unfortunately youtube has recently been making that harder, if not impossible
especially for chrome users since adblockers got nerfed there
double especially for mobile
upload to ma Seka
tbh it's time to just go back to firefox
- wants to not get targeted advertising
- uses web browser created by company that exists for the purpose of targeted advertising
Why'd you edit upload to ma Seka.
It's great.
If we only uploaded to ma Seka It'l be easier to gatekeep people. grow the community.
i didn't edit that part, it was crossed out since the start
toki pona lesson in which you describe the process of installing an adblocker
YES
aha, i do have stuff i could upload to ma seka
i haven't thought about ma seka a lot though
it feels like i should only put tpt stuff up there
ni li ken musi, a a a a a
i believe we have a video about tp from kala Asi
and the instance description is
sitelen en kalama! o pana o lukin e ijo musi! (This instance is dedicated to content in or about the constructed language Toki Pona. It is not a general-purpose instance.)
ahh okay, fair enough
a tpenpo li open
oh no it's configured for me specifically
mi toki ike la
@forest hollow it's possible to enable it for individuals, but i'm not satisfied with the commands or database and haven't sat down to fix it for a while
hmm
i do have the originals for all of my content and could put it up
singlehandedly triples the disk use of ma seka
honestly idk if we're even using more than the 40gb that came with the vm (i got an extra 256gb expecting more usage but yeah)
also i should really put the box to more use
wordpress perhaps
i would only add about 20gb lmao
honestly i'll be more worried about the transcoding
half a core and all

confused, whats the thing that theyre sama? i havent seen that glyph so im confused
It's a simplified version of "jan", drawn in a single loop
(And the 2 // lines are a simplified version of "e")
I wouldn't expect people to be able to read it, although it is possible
aaa mi sona!
There are captions on the ma Seka and YouTube versions.
And I also donโt expect anyone else to be able to read it. But thatโs not my goal anyway.
Yeah
Just giving extra context, sorry

Learn Toki Pona, because it's free! https://mun.la/sona
These works come from a thought:
How can I make more things in Toki Pona, but also make things for people not already in Toki Pona? The answer was to do something that interests me, in both Toki Pona and in English!
But doing that wasn't easy. Usually, when you change one group of words ...
