Okay I shall explain. You see Hero here ?
||He has thorn crowns instead of a regular halo. I think the martyr/guilt symbolism is clear enough there... So do you remember that time when he was depressed and got mad at Kel when he tried to help ? Well the symbolism here is that "trying to help" = "trying to remove the thorn crown from Hero's head" aka "trying to stop him blaming/hurting himself" And that's why Kel has holes in his hands, he got pierced by the thorns, which is to say... by trying to help, he got himself hurt in the process. Not to mention he got blood all over himself, so the hurt, blame, guilt all spilled onto him a little, and now he also feels bad for not being able to help.||
That was the idea, anyway.
