NO Steering Commanded

When NO steering is commanded, steering pump swash plate angle is zero, trapping oil in the closed-loop. With oil in the closed-loop trapped, the steering motor (M60) is not allowed to rotate. Steering planetary sun gears (1, 2) are held stationary when steering motor is not turning.

Steering Commanded

When steering is commanded, steering pump swash plate angle increases to start pumping oil to steering motor (M60). During a left forward turn, steering motor (M60) rotates forward.

When steering motor (M60) is rotating forward, left steering planetary sun gear (1) rotates backward, and right steering planetary sun gear (2) rotates forward.

With left steering planetary sun gear (2) rotating backwards, gear ratio between left steering planetary carrier (4) and left steering planetary ring gear (9) is decreased. Meanwhile, the right steering planetary sun gear (3) rotating forward increases the right-hand steering planetary gear ratio.

The decreased left-hand steering planetary gear ratio results in slower axle speed, and the increased right-hand ratio results in faster right axle speed. With right axle turning faster, and left axle turning slower, the vehicle turns to the left.
