reason they took it out of service, was mainly because it guzzled 300 gallons of gas a hour, that's 18 gallons a min!

There were also issues with erosion of the turbine blades resulting from fuel directly contacting them. Powerful they were at 8500 hp, but the same kind of power could and can be more easily and economically by using multiple diesel locomotives. Three or four diesels then, and about two diesels now could easily replace so much head end power. And look what they're able to do:. They can run locomotives anywhere in the train via remote control.

IMO Theres a few reasons these wont be used as part of the UP heritage fleet. Besides the fuel issue, Turbines suck a lot of a air. Unfiltered air. They changed the intake location but still, any debris in the air is a real problem. Turbines are super duper $$$ expensive to build and maintain. And for what purpose? There is little outside the engine covers visible to excite people. Turbines sound different, but kinda look the same as other period locomotives to the average person... Steam power gets people to watch, dream and wonder, not so much a hidden turbine. Nobody really stares at a jet plane and goes wow for too long.
