I mean really it's just it was a right time thing but it's also more or less directly responsible for modern otaku culture although obviously not like in general
But essentially it took what Anno liked as a kid and twisted them in a specific way that people hadn't seen before or at least weren't used to
I would absolutely not say it did things mecha as a whole "failed to do" prior but as a confluence of ideas
It was a big deal especially in the 90s because other than Gundam being perpetual it was really only GaoGaiGar that made as big a splash in the whole decade but also it really is just Anno going y'know I like Gundam and Ultraman, what if I put a Gundam pilot inside a robot that's actually an Ultraman and then torture him with vague Christian symbolism because I'm also depressed and kinda gothy right now
So like I feel giving Eva all of the credit ever and not recognizing how Anno's personal interests directly led to it

I do also highly recommend watching at least the movie trilogy recut of Mobile Suit Gundam
There's a TV series version and I like that more but the movies cut out a lot of the like Mazinger DNA and are almost certainly what Anno preferred in terms of like character arcs
All of it is there in the TV version it's just more condensed in the trilogy
Mazinger is also a series about a boy who falls into a robot his dad built and is forced to fight but unlike Amuro Ray and Shinji Ikari Kouji Kabuto is pretty into the whole deal

Not really. It mostly depends on the animation studio, and by extension, how much time, effort, and budget will be implemented into the production.
It's arguable that the greatest error of the 2016 anime was for it to be stylized in CGI.
