I read an absolutely fantastic review of jojolion on reddit
I read a sizeable portion of Jojolion but I had no fucking clue what was going on half the time. From what I could glean from it, this arc of JoJo has absolutely no raised stakes at all.
Gappy is fighting a fruit cartel. Why? To heal the person who was Yoshikage’s mother. Cool. Why? Because she’s the mother of Yoshikage? But why? At least with Jotaro vs Dio, curing Holly of the curse was secondary to stopping Dio. Gappy fighting the rokakaka fruit vendors has no story significance at all. They’re not some evil vampire or Stand user looking to reset the universe, nor does Gappy have any special grudge against them. He did with the guy who killed Yoshikage, but Gappy killed him ages ago. Now with nobody to kill, who’s the main villain now? Let’s not forget we were hot on the heels of Steel Ball Run, who had a clear enemy all throughout: Valentine, and he was the greatest villain in JoJo history. But here? Who even is the main villain?
Let’s ignore the relevance of the story for now. The Stand battles in this arc have to be some of the most confusing I’ve ever seen. Classic example was the very first Stand battle against Fun Fun Fun. The first Stand battle of the arc is a very defining moment for that arc. We had Jotaro vs Avdol, Josuke vs Jotaro, Giorno vs Buccellati and Jolyne vs Guess. But in this battle, there was no real significance to the battle at all. That and it is essentially a watered down version of fighting Part 3’s Justice but infinitely worse. You could make the argument Jolyne vs Guess was the Little Feet fight all over again, but at least that one had stakes, an actual purpose and Guess has more creative uses for shrinking people than Formaggio. In the Fun Fun Fun battle, it just sort of...happens, with no real rhyme or reason. And that theme extends to all the battles in the series: why was Gappy trying to figure out a sentient leaf Stand? Why was Joshu fighting a money Stand? Is there any use in Yasuho’s Stand except being a walking, talking plot device? Too many questions, not enough answers.
But do you know what? I could forgive all of it. Every single problem outlined thus far...If Gappy wasn’t such a boring character! He has amnesia and wants to recover his lost memories. Cool! But then he does half way through. Now what? There’s nothing left to his character now that he doesn’t even do anything of interest after this. His Stand is by far the weakest in the entire JoJo line up. Even Jonathan and part 2 Joseph could clap Gappy and they’re non-Stand users! It has no overwhelming strength. It just extracts things using tiny bubbles and transfers it to other stuff. This would be OP if it could be giant bubbles and he could displace matter, but because it’s tiny bubbles, it’s so weak! Another thing to note is that Gappy is the only JoJo to lose in a straight up 1v1 fight (Blue Hawaii) and has to be saved by another. Let that sink in.
