You see that is part of his character, it’s all because of the upbringing within his family, he was taught to be spoilt as he wasn’t taught about the true family values, the absence of his mother and his father being busy with his business didn’t help either. This would have been prevented if his father and brother would have taught him the decency, but no, his father knows nothing but to give money to his son instead of teaching him the real way. Since everyone in his family ignored him he would feel lonely and unloved so what could he do but go to his child friend? His child friend being yasuhoe. And as the years would pass he would think that they cared for each other and he thought he loved her but she didn’t. Instead of straight out telling him that she didn’t love him and had a serious talk with him instead she just says it once passing it by joshu’s head. He was mistaking it as a flirt of some sorts and so he would try to impress her and such. He was never taught about love and so he had no idea of rejection so he had to cope by grabbing onto something that was damned to reject him.

You see, Joshu is the true tragic protaginist with the absence of all things a normal person would have and the only things he knows is money, and metophorically Gappy is replacing him in the family. Something that Joshu can cling onto, even so if Yasuho isn’t his girlfriend, he still tries to make it better to her by being less of a jerk after the Paper Moon King arc. Joshu can’t get a part time job because of his poor physicality, strength and mentality and this isn’t for him to blame but for his upbringing. Even so everybody makes fun of his appearance (the readers too) this truly tells us about how Joshu is opressed by society and everyone around him even breaking the 4th wall as the readers make fun of his appearance. It’s a powerful social commentary on why you shouldn’t make fun of others without looking into their backstory. It was also not Joshu being a jerk but it was his Dad being disrespectful for making him move out of his own room just for a stranger. It’s metaphorical for how his family thinks that he is of the lowest ranking of the family even lower than the half blind girl in the household which truly shows how Joshu is oppressed. He’s oppressed by his family, society, the readers that read the manga and the main character himself. Araki puts his writing to a magnificant scale when he was writing the character of Joshu. Sure he seems to be cheeky and a douche but that’s the aftermath of not being taught love and taught the lesson and values of life.
