Arena Special Effects (Raids)
All raids, whether Portal to the Unknown or event raids (Gates of Doom, Celestrial Gates, or Fire Gates) contain arena special effects on various nodes throughout a map that alter the battle conditions, all favoring the enemy and making the fight more challenging. The nodes with a special effect are signified by a glowing red hue around the node with occasional red rings emanating from it (see Figure 1). When you click on the node, near the top right of the screen above the raid points, it will show you what the arena special effect is (see Figure 2). You can click on it to see a small description. It’s important to note that these effects are not always the same raid-to-raid, though the location of the node within the map with the special effect remains the same. For effects that happen every set amount of turns, you will be able to see a timer in the top right of the screen during the battle that clues you in to when that effect is going to take place. You can also click this image to get a reminder as to what the effect is (see Figure 3).

Many of these buffs and debuffs are constant and unremovable, and some trigger every few turns. For the permanent ones, you should choose a team that isn’t too heavily impacted by the effect. For the intermittent effects, of course you can choose a team that overall isn’t heavily impacted by the effect, but you can also enter the battle and try to strategically coordinate your attacks/use of skills to minimize the impact of the effect.
The following chart lists out the various special effects you may encounter by alphabetical order, as well as its description with some added clarity as to who the effect is directly impacting. While the Tips section is not completely exhaustive, it will offer basic tips on how to minimize the effect with an example or two of heroes or factions to avoid or to use. Of course, even if a hero or faction is significantly targeted by an effect, the overall strength and power of your heroes can help minimize and overcome them depending on the situation and enemy team.
