Black screen after opening game

Hello all! I just downloaded this game for the first time the other day. Steam download, running on a Win10 Dell Inspiron 3793 laptop. Steam Cloud saves enabled. Steam overlay enabled. When I open the game, it is only a black screen. If I click on the screen, a cursor appears that can move around.

The only thing I can think of that may have caused an issue is my cousin downloaded a mod, I believe it was called 'RainMeadow' or something like that? We were trying to play multiplayer but my game has NEVER been able to open to a menu or anything like that. Nothing past the blank screen and cursor.

I have tried:
*Verifying files. (I will get the message '1 file not verified' and Steam does its thing and redownloads. No change.
*Completely deleting the 'Rain World' folder in the 'common' folder and verifying files to reinstall. No change.
*Uninstalling game from Steam and deleting 'Rain World' folder from 'common,' then redownloading and reverifying files. No change.

*Unsubscribing from mods on Steam and trying the above three steps again.

No 'exceptionLog.txt' available in the root folder of Rain World.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

open this file in a text editor, write 'true' in the highlighted spot (replacing 'false') then run the game again and send output_log.txt

I have to head to bed in about ten minutes (early work, blegh), would it be worth it for me to come back tomorrow and try to bugfix, or do you think I should just get a refund and play on my cousin's PC? Genuinely bewildered on what could be causing the problem.
