For number 1, you don't know much about what the deal with the robot is yet. So far, you're just a little animal exploring uncharted lands searching for its family, and trying not to get eaten along the way. There's a lot of things happening in the background which, as a mere creature living in an ecosystem, you're still not aware of. Do what you can, go where you wanna go. Explore, and maybe you'll discover the purpose of this strange robot at some point.
As for 2, you can see what they do during the hibernation or death screen. At the bottom left you have the Passage button, and hovering over it gives you a description of what it does.

I have two things I need help with:
1#: What does the little grey robot do at the end of shoreline? I got an achievment but thats about it.
2#: How do passages work? I got the pacifist one and the survivor but dont know what to do with it.
