I'm a bit late, but there is actually a better answer: Expedition switches you to a hidden, new save slot when starting one. It sounds like it's working as intended
I've heard of it sometimes not properly switching you back to your old save slot when when leaving the expedition so, if that's the case, just go to the options menu and switch the save slot back manually
