#[UPDATE: Appears to be Reflex] Game not smooth despite high FPS - Also strange flickering

PC Specs:
9800X3D
RTX 5090 FE
64GB 6000MHz RAM

Playing @ 4K on a aw3225qf OLED monitor w/ G-Sync enabled - game is capped @ 180FPS.

Graphics settings mostly maxed out.

Nvidia driver is latest 581.29.

Game just doesn't seem to run smoothly for me, FPS remains high for the most part but it's as if the frame pacing is off and becomes very jarring. Most noticeable during combat or while running around / panning the camera quickly. GPU usage also seems to drop during these scenarios from 90-99% down to as low as 30% and then back up again without any fluctuation in FPS.

As for the flickering, I believe it might also be related to the frame pacing. It's only very noticeable in darker scenes and not the same as I have seen in other games where massive FPS fluctuations cause severe VRR flicker on OLED monitors. It's more like a very slight constant flicker that is consistent in pacing and it is always there despite the FPS being rock solid.

Things I've tried so far:

  • Turning DLSS on or off (no change)
  • Turning Frame gen on or off (no change)
  • Turning Reflex on or off (no change)
  • Uncapping FPS (no change)
  • Turning Async Compute on or off (no change)
  • Turning V-Sync on or off (no change)
  • Switching from DX12 to DX11. This seemingly removes the flickering issue, however, it also seems to disables VRR for some reason which might be why the flickering disappears. Also causes my FPS cap to be ignored and instates the in-game FPS cap which cannot be adjusted or turned off (changes back every time I exit menu). FPS is just as high with less GPU usage but stutters all over much worse than anything I've seen so far in DX12.

I pushed through last night and continued playing in DX12 as I had been anticipating the release and was excited but I might have to put the game down for now until these issues are rectified, which is a shame because besides the issues I was having a lot of fun with the game!

If anyone has any solutions it would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Hey, thank you for this detailed report, I will pass it to our team to investigate

Thank you 👍 . Seen a few people suggesting it could be CPU / and or motherboard and BIOS version related but I'm not so sure. Either way will provide further details below if it helps track down the issue:

Mobo: Gigabyte X870e Aorus Master
BIOS version: F6a
Latest AMD chipset drivers

Also taken a video of the flickering issue now that I'm home from work. See below. The video exacerbates the issue and it doesn't look this bad in person, however, still present. I'm guessing this issue will only crop up for people using an OLED monitor? I've never seen VRR flickering like this in any other game with a stable FPS so it's got me stumped

Update for anyone encountering any similar issues. While at first toggling Nvidia Reflex appeared to do nothing for my situation, I have since re-installed the game and done some more troubleshooting. I ended up enabling Reflex, restarting the game (and loading my save), then closing the game, re-opening the game, disabled Reflex and restarted the game one final time and most of my issues seem to have disappeared. No more VRR like flicker and the game is much smoother, still the odd stuttering but definitely playable

#

TLDR - Reflex appears to be the issue and sometimes doesn't fully deactivate after toggling.

Not smooth? That's extremely smooth dude

atleast for me framegen made the game less smooth etc, also would help if u used msi afterburner with frametime graph so its easier to see the spikes in frame pacing etc so then u can compare settings etc and find the problem easier

#

framegen causes alot of issues in other games atleast and dlss also can i dont really use either because the image quality isnt asgood and framegen adds delay and makes the game feel less responsive but its likely one of these 2

steady dome
#

That framerate is entirely playable

#

Try playing like this

nimble nimbus
#

frame spikes dont rlly feel smooth on good spec pcs

steady dome
#

Frame spikes is playable compared to what I normally play with

#

40 fps is a luxury on a very good day lmao

nimble nimbus
#

i normally just upgrade my pc or not play a game if it doesnt run well

#

and i can barely play games on my steam deck that are more of a triple a experience mostly play indies but its alot better on controller to play at low framerates

steady dome
#

That's my framerate with all settings at the lowest possible setting. People are complaining at being 150+ fps on the max settings

#

Performance is actually so bad D312 runs BETTER than D311 lmfao

nimble nimbus
#

performance is ok not amazing but also not best optimized game ever

steady dome
#

DL2 ran perfectly fine at around 40 fps at a pretty much constant state

#

Sometimes dipping to 20-30

nimble nimbus
#

i normally expect over 100 fps from any game i play cuz my specs justify that and in this i do get over that so it seems fine

steady dome
#

There's no reason for you to complain then

nimble nimbus
#

not rlly complaining just told the OP what they should do about lag spikes

#

cuz framegen for me atleast caused minor lag spikes

Unfortunately I don't have RTSS installed at the moment as it caused issues in another game for me. I've not been playing with frame gen on so that can't have been the issue, I only turned it on to test if it made the stutter go away. The issue is 100% reflex as I played all evening with it properly turned off and it was night and day compared to release day when I played with it on
