So when fighting zombies for the beast mode bar to fill up when it gets full it automatically activates without me pushing the buttons both sticks on my controller to activate beast mode once the bar get full you just go beast mode until you cancel it yourself is this intended or how the beast works in combat?

It should happen at the beginning, you can unlock skill that help you control your "Beast" 😉
