Oh this is amazing! I have a feeling that your save file got stuck in a state and you have to get it out by going into pause menu, each time. Will pass this on, thank you.
If you have the save file and you can send it to me, this would very much help us!

Not sure if that's gonna be useful:
I've just tried to join someones on coop on my other, 4h save, and the bug is still there.
I can try reinstalling the game if you think that could help but its not a major bug for me + I can just quickly go to pause menu after joining someone.

And to this question: "Are you using any mods or changed data files?"
I don't have any mods atm but I had one in the past, I had mod for statistics somewhere before patch 1.4.0 if I remember correctly. This mod was showing stats for distance traveled and it was useful for the Ultramarathon trophy. I uninstalled the mod and verified game files after patch 1.4.0 or the one that introduced distance traveled statsitic.
