@lucid fox Biggest tip I can give this is probably this: The zombies get harder as you progress through the main story. Story completion rate determines their health and damage values. Thus, and I don't know how quickly you reached 21% but either way, it's kind of a bad idea to rush through the story unless you're into having a challenging time.
Take your time to do sidequests, explore the map, levelling up your three skill trees, kicking zombie faces in. Have some fun. No real need to grind for the normal skill trees, the endgame one is a different story.
Most importantly, go with the flow.
At the beginning, you might have a pretty hard time fighting zombies. That's normal. You're supposed to rely more on agility and parkour in the first part of the game. If you do have to fight near the beginning before you start getting good bladed weapons, improvise. Use your environment creatively. Craft tools that's help you and give you the edge. Use blueprints to add effects to your weapons, and upgrades to increase their damage/durability/handling.
Always be looting. You can never have too many crafting supplies, but you definitely can have too little if you're not looting everything you see.

Guru reward is the best you can get, which gives you gold weapons and kings inside the locked chests in the armoury. You need to complete Prison in under 8 minutes on normal, 12 on hard, and 25 on nightmare.

But the weapons are also scaled to your survivor level, you're gonna get "better" weapons if you have max survivor

I think that only ammo you can get by killing enemies with guns. You can buy crafting parts from random encounters´ traders.

Or if you have Dying light: Companion app, you can get ammo in that app and then send it to yourself.

Whatever you find effective? Idk. I think it depends what you want to have better. And best is either clicker or king, because it gives you +2 to all attributes of weapon. But I don´t remember default attributes of bat.

You can loot three drops without killing any zombie and it was very quick. The Stuffed Turtle quarantine zone. If you have a grappling hook, you can get the those three drop under 30 seconds.

It's really not the game's fault that multiplayer works the way it does. All game engines that work on the host/client model are limited when it comes to quest based RPGs. I just wish DL was more like Vermintide, where only the host is required to own the DLC.

What are other ways to get gold weapons? Been trying to loot hard chests on Nightmare+ but no luck. And I doubt I'd be able to clear the prison or bozak with my current char :/

well if you are over level 23 on survival you can get a chance of getting gold weapons from invasions.
