You can use Camouflage, but it only works for Volatiles and Night Walkers, not Alpha Volatiles. Flares are used to keep whoever is chasing you at bay for a short time, which is enough to lose a pursuit fairly quick. Standing in a flare will not make you invincible, the infected chasing you will just whack you inside the flare if you are in it long enough.

Btw unless you are doing a bounty, there is no reason to picklock a hard or very hard lock at night.
