Yes, it works without hyper mode, but from what Firemind said it, sounded like he sent a person across half the map. Hyper mode is quite strong, but not that strong. You'd need to utilise both of them in order to do things like that.
With a decent height and the right angle you can essentially have a person fly forever as long as they don't hit anything. My longest was roughly 60 seconds in the air, only reason it wasn't longer was because I respawned when I flew out of the map.

If you can, use your flares by dropping them behind you. The animation is faster and can save your life if you get hit by UV disable spit
Have a shield with you because it can block spits, but remember the nh can tackle you while you're holding the shield and you can't evade that tackle
