Although I don't know how, since the infected's iris never actually reveal more of the pupils, they can still somehow see better in the dark than people who haven't turned yet. So I'd imagine a volatile could keep looking at 173 in partial darkness where a human would already be unable to view it. But that's not very relevant information.
So enough with the explaining and I'll just get to the important part
The volatile walks into the room and the gate is closed behind it. The lights are kept on and it looks around the room in search of anything to consume. 173 is facing the wall in the opposite corner of the chamber so it remains in the volatile's field of vision. The vaguely humanoid shape catches some interest in the volatile's gaze and it analyzes the statue, eventually discarding it since it can't smell anything. The volatile doesn't seem interested enough in the corner or wall behind it to turn around. The lights are turned off after 180 seconds and an immediate concrete scraping sound followed by a crunch can be heard. Lights are turned back on after 5 seconds and the Volatile lays lifeless on the floor with the statue standing next to the corpse. The head appears to only be twisted enough to face straight backwards from the original position rather than being rotated a full 360 degrees or anywhere past 170.

They only have an insatiable hunger and they try to find stuff to eat. They can still experience curiosity (why loud sounds attract them), fear (why they get into dark places from burning uv rays), and anger (why they swing and growl at things and get frustrated).
So killing them actually means killing them. It's like putting a vegetable person out of their misery.

@leaden orchid I have gone from punching a tree to felling a tree with a hydraulic, tilting grab equipped with feed rollers, delimbing knives, diameter and length measurers, color marker and a rotating sawchain bar with a chain speed of 10000+ revolutions per minute, hanging on the boom of a 14 ton 8 wheeler machine
