There's monuments (and symbolic graves, marked by stones) dedicated to those who gave their lives but couldn't actually be buried properly. I imagine that's fairly common practice no matter which country you're in, with possible exceptions.
Can't think of any examples of actual catacombs being built. I've never heard about it, at any rate.
