It's not like those are "iNTelleCtUaL" games but they obviously appeal to people who don't like handholding and being served entertainment.

When you dilute that, you water it down a little too much. I feel like game devs are too worried these days about games having to have mass appeal. The space is so big these days and there are so many niches.
