Eh, it depends. It's recommended in case you need to expand your bus. But if you know what you're planning to build then you can design the size of your bus in the beginning and then just build on both sides without any worries.
I used to always build on one side, but as you said, it is a lot more enjoyable to build on both sides and the bus doesn't get so ridiculously long so you have to run back and forth.

The steam engines will be moved to the left where there is a humongeous lake and I will probably have a trainyard there too to feed the smelters from the correct direction
tbh one of the most annoying features I kinda wish I had disabled is the resources of your ore deposits running out.
If you don't plan and construct in time for it you can kill your entire base until you opened a new supply chain

I usually just bump the size and richness up to the maximum. It's usually never a problem really when your starting patches have a few millions. Once you get a train going to and from a bigger patch you can look at dozens of millions in richness.

Especially the whole oil aspect. The seed we went with had oil really far away so we just drew like kilometres worth of pipe to get it to our factory. But hey, we did finish the game so it paid off in the end.

As for oil itself it's all about that good old liquid bus.
But even then for full mastery of oil you need to learn how circuit networks work in order to avoid the oil products overflowing to avoid a complete stop in production.
I understand the idea behind them, but I haven't quite been able to implement them into my own factories just yet. I just go with the good old method of breaking the fluid tanks when they get full.
