that likely accounts for the difference
As of, not from
As of != From
ah, huh
welp. Looks like two conflicting sources, but perhaps I'm reading it wrong
also, still 11th
not great
We know Spain was hit really hard, they just recently recovered and are still struggling I believe
USA does a lot more testing than the countries on that list around it too
since that's Chrome
So that's going to skew the numbers obviously
the source I provided accounts for testing
Here is how things are going in Iowa
We beat September in 9 days
Actually I think we beat it yesterday so 8 days
Didn't the CDC release a new report showing 59-75 deaths per infection was like 0.0025% or something?
I was trying to find it but can't, multiple things on the news about it though
Even if rate of death per infection is very low spread over our large population, I still wouldn't want to get it.
Long term consequences aren't at all understood yet.
Yeah well it's a novel virus, so that's to be expected, same thing with H1N1 when it swept through
there was, at one point, a study that said that after recovering from COVID your mental abilities were aged about 10 years
Let's remember that death isn't the only metric.
looks like that study might have some foundation
I don't feel like mentally aging 10 years
I'm good on that
Lung scarring from the pneumonia is no fun either
yeah, according to research I'm likely still recovering from smoking when I was 18
10 years ago
I'm good on more lung damage
With all the bong rips I take, I can't afford lung damage! D:
I'd be interested in what P value they got for that study, why isn't it linked?
Maybe not web published, though that's rare these days
The study is very broad, they don't clearly define methodology either.
Mounting evidence suggests a lot of published research is false.

sounds about right for a preliminary study
"Is most published research wrong?" -> "Is it epidemiology?" -> "Yes" 😛
lol
Yeah you can't draw any conclusions from that study scientifically. It sounds like a study to figure out what studies to do at best.
The video is good by the way, explains the P value system that basically all papers use as the statistical standard of significance.
I just have a bone to pick with epidemiology in general. It's so easy to get a paper published, peer reviewed, with a conclusion to support whatever messaging you want.
Yeah, he showed a study where people were proven to have precognition when a lewd picture is behind one curtain or the other curtain.
Basically they just tried different image types until one showed precognition that passed the P value standard. 😛
I think he highlights that statistically, if every study was done 100% correctly, 1/3 of all studies would still likely be wrong.
I'm more interested in actual clinical research
Likewise, research that can be replicated mostly.
Not even sure how I typed whatever word that was...
I wonder what my family will say when I tell them the company that actually made the "Pfizer" vaccine is funded by Bill Gates
"I'm not taking that vaccine, I don't want autism?"
Not autism, microchip
BioNTech made it, Pfizer is handling getting it through trials and manufacturing
BioNTech started getting a lot of funding from Bill Gates in 2019
Bill Gates created COVID so he could microchip the world with his fake vaccines and track everything you think, do, and say
Where does George Soros fit in all this?
Or as I like to call it, Wednesdays with my grandparents
My only living grandparents are on my mother's side, and they're Korean. Fortunately they're not batshit crazy
Pretty sure my dad is a Trump voter though, but he'd never tell me that. He keeps his politics to himself, but I get the vibe.
Thankfully my grandma, only grandparent still alive, doesn't have internet, so am fine on that front, lol
My parents switched to voting greens from was is out labor party I guess, so they fine too
I do have batshit crazy aunt's tho
But we don't have much contact for plenty other reasons
I basically only see them sometimes on birthdays and maybe xmas
As sad as that sounds, they have a really different social status so they have really different problems to be and different opinions and stuff I just can't listen to without going crazy
I miss growing up in South Korea with an emerging internet in the early/mid 90s. PC cafes cropping up, in Korea the internet was all about gaming lol
Fuck Twitter/Facebook 😦
I don't know, I feel like people kept themselves more in check, disinformation on social media seems to just embolden them
It's more like that I don't understand their struggles in life in they don't understand mine
"you got a stable job, good income and a flat in downtown, what more could you want?!"
a flat that doesn't cost all of my stable income?
😄
that's a good start
being able to afford to live where you do
and have food at the same time
broom closets around here, with roommates, will run you $500/mo
10-15 sq ft.
I lived in one
rip 😛
'sabout average
I pay $1200/mo for 700 sqft all to myself, but it's still quite a bit to pay... but Cali prices lol
I've been looking at apartments for next year
$1200/mo for 700 sq ft. would be a steal
Yeah prices are climbing pretty hard, and it's still considered pretty expensive compared to the rest of the country.
I don't know why I'm still living here and paying Cali prices when my income isn't actually tied to the state 😛
one day I'll not have to choose between food, gas, and a roof
I work remotely so I could go to Tennessee and live like a king 😛
True but it's not so bad in the denser cities
Yeah, sounds about normal for living in the south
😦
Still a good price
man, that would be nice
thankfully my new job does allow me to travel around the world for a couple years at a time
so I'm planning some trips
Visa hop between countries 😄
next 5-10 years or so
It's only a 3 hour flight and the one way ticket is really cheap 😛
I've been eyeing Japan and some of the Nordic EU places
there's some other logistical problems with me hopping flights to various countries
I would love to have residence in Korea... cost of living is so cheap
Psh, travel light
heh
but yeah, since work allows for some travel I was thinking a few years down the line I'd take it
work in another country for a couple years, then return home
sounds like a great way to finally travel
assuming the world doesn't implode by then, which it shouldn't
Problem is, how do you plan to legally reside in another country for 2 years?
it's complicated to do, but it's all sorted
Unless you're an EU citizen traveling to other EU countries, I'd be curious to know lol
I just want the chance to travel before I get too old 😄
Doesn't sound like your work is sponsoring you a visa
a flat that doesn't cost all of my stable income?
@elder portal I can't even complain about that, 45m2, 660 euro, that's really cheap for city
they would, yes
also, damn
how do I get these cheap places? 😦
cries in Coloradan
It's cologne, 3rd or 4th largest city in germany ^^
damn, that's a really good price lol
480 sqft @ $780 usd in a major city
oh, I know cologne! I put that on when I do my fancy getup for meeting fancy people
/s
Because europe wages are half of US wages for some reason
lol, yeah
an ambulance ride, without insurance, runs you $1,000 U.S.
just sitting in a hospital room is >$2,500 U.S.
for a couple hours
If my friends wouldn't live outside of my city by 20km or so, I wouldn't need a car anymore
welcome to American health
Since public transportation is so good
an IV costs, I think around $8,000 U.S.
somewhere around that ballpark
you enjoy your nationalized healthcare
yeah if you survive emergency care, chances are you're going bankrupt lol
without insurance, anyway, yeah
This is just subway/tram
and we have a lot more emergency care because preventive care is also strongly tied to insurance that people don't have or have poor plans, so people with preventive issues escalate to emergency care eventually
once all my bills come in from my hospital visit i'll let you guys know the total cost of it all. chrysti and I are expecting around half a million
That includes busses
sounds about right
@upper steppe I believe in a system where every single able American pays a small share to cover a portion of that half a million 🙂
I mean, it's only busses and tram/subway in grey
And it costs me 27 euro a month to use everything
broke my hand, tried to drive myself to the hospital because no insurance, ex called the ambulance anyway, got a $1k bill for a 20-minute ride
Plus carrying a friend after 7 or on weekends
most expensive Uber ever
This is why insurance is public and universial here
i can tell you the anastegiologist bill was $10,000 (thats the guy that puts you to sleep and makes sure you stay alive the whole time)
I don't think it's possible to not have insurance here
i got that bill already
Unless you don't work and aren't registered j guess
oh, yeah, the guy that injected me and re-set my bones in my hand was there for half an hour or so and the bill was about 100k
@near glen Do you even call it insurance. I assume it was just healthcare that everyone has access to. I assume private insurance still exists, but do you still refer to your public access to healthcare as insurance?
but he's also getting paid jack all
Yes it insurance
I see
It's just deducted from your wage automatically
thankfully Obamacare (mostly) saved my ass and prevented me from filing bankruptcy
And since everybody has to pay, it's affordable
still had to pay the $1k ride
Since rates are tied to wage
isnt the problem with free public healthcare the long waiting lines? Like, if you have to go to a doc for the flu, you're waiting 3 months, which by the time it comes around you're perfectly well on your own
Yeah the math was actually done in the US too, if everyone paid a fair share, the actual amount of # people pay in premiums and medical bills monthly would go down in a Medicare-for-All system
the man behind that media campaign against public healthcare now regrets it and is a whistleblower
It depends on how much doctors are around you, but if are sick for the normal stuff, you will see a doctor the same day in virtually everywhere in germany
I would call at 9 when they open, they then say "hey, bit full, come at 11" and I wait another hour at most then
@upper steppe Planet Money, great NPR podcast, covers the whole thing. How it happened, who was behind it, and why: https://www.npr.org/2020/10/19/925354134/frame-canada
good listen
highly recommended
I think it also depends on the country and your particular situation.
Some things might have waiting involved
If you however need to see a specialist, an appointment can take a while, but they don't even ask you if you private on the phone, it's like that for everyone
it's regional and depends on your issues
But there's enough evidence out there to say almost all of these systems are doing a better job at preventive care vs America.
But yes, long wait times aren't caused by public insurance, public insurance doesn't make more ppl sick
One of the big, big issues is that Americans don't seek preventive care because it's unaffordable.
And yes, we got less ppl in our systems because ppl go to the doctors early
Where as in the rest of the world, it's normal, part of your annual exam.
And regularly
The annual checkups in the US are very poor.
One of the big, big issues is that Americans don't seek preventive care because it's unaffordable.
@cosmic badge i'm guilty of that... i dont go to the doc unless i'm dying (or have a broken bone that needs to be reset)
Yeah and then it turns into an emergency, which costs more :<
I haven't had a regular checkup in.. almost a decade, now? Can't afford it.
thankfully young enough to generally not need it
A yearly physical exam in South Korea for example can take up to 2-3 hours
Because of all the tests they run
I mean, I also don't like going to doctors, and I only go when I don't know how I can help myself, but I know I could just go whenever
I kinda wanna get my blood values checked out tho, but I can wait, don't wanna be a burden on the system right now when others need it more
e.g. I can go and see my GP for advice in a week or so depending on the issue, they also often keep seats open for emergencies, but, my GP was in a student area, so, it's not too bad, back in preston, it was easily a week and a bit; waiting in the hospital for a broken bone can easily lead to an 8 hour sitting around as there's no real need to build an extra hospital until it gets to breaking point, and often the process and management of buidling new hospitals is comical
yeah, a week vs. a few hours
more people, sure, but at least some of that's due to the system
Yeah, it's hours here, I don't think you have to wait a week anywhere in germany for a GP
In Germany it's more the problem that if you outside of cities in the middle of nowhere that your GP might be 50km away
national/socialized healthcare FTW
I've had pretty decent insurance in the US and even then I still have had to make appointments with GPs which could be days lol
one day maybe we'll have it
So right off the bat your system sounds better lol
The issue we have is capacity and doctors, the rota generally doesn't have free slots for a few days, unless it's urgent and then they generally keep stuff open if you call in at 9am
Cause nobody wants to work on the land
problem is it seems like we're one of the only (maybe the only?) first-world countries with days or weeks of lead time on average
sounds more like a systemic issue
currently, I'm looking at insurance companies as being the problem
They most certainly are lol
they're at least one of the problems
They are middle men just sucking up cash in the name of administrative overhead.
I mean, insurance works better the more members you have
Since you can divide the risk more easily and have more money to work with on the capital markets
That's why universial systems work so well, everybody is part of the system
Yeah, you need a risk management system, insurance, of some kind, just doesn't have to be private.
apparently we chose more money
Rates for public health insurance are set by gov
Companies can add a little bit ontop of that to cover their asses, which allows for competition, but they all generally charge the same
There is actually a hospital near me which was supposed to be opened in early 2017, 2018 it lost the workforce as the company they contracted has vanished (a common issue with government contract hires), and then had to have a huge chunk to be rebuilt due to structorial issues, and is not set to open now until 2022
wonder if that stems from the same root, or if that's other issues
clearly, our healthcare industry has problems. lol
I think it's primarily the lowest bidder aspect ontop of shady practices around actually vetting these companies
gov't contracting seems to work the same regardless of sector, then
We getting better tho
We doing many things as public private partnerships now
It's part of why people are against aspects like single payer, because everything is controlled by the government
We gov says I want this, how much? And you buy for exactly that
There are treatments available around the world which aren't available here because of the cost of them
as I said, I had a mate with HS, where there is like only one doctor in the UK able to prescribe it, and he has to basically apply to a panel to justify the cost of the treatment
And you can always get extra treatment
oh, right, Cat's in the U.K.
iunno, that one hospital visit I had that I almost didn't have Obamacare on would have absolutely bankrupted me
Obamacare covered almost all of it
Which state?
CO
obamacare saved a lot of peoples asses, but also handed it to many other peoples asses at the same point
hundreds of thousands of dollars, at least. And that's about average.
Oh, yeah I think Colorado expanded their Medicaid thanks to Obamacare
that's not a functioning system
It really depends on which state you live in whether Obamacare helped or not
Usually
yeah
average for even a checkup is a few thousand dollars
depending on the place
again, that's not a functioning system
Right, quite a lot of states didn't accept Medicaid expansion so poor people living there are pretty fucked
I cannot afford to do anything in the healthcare industry, because I'm too broke to afford basic care
a single shot is anywhere from $700-$1500
and that's not counting the visit
i think that there are many reasons why it costs so much, I mean, there are the fun and nice stories of people asking for cuts on the cost and they get a few thousand knocked off which is shocking, I think an aspect of it is that you're not really in a position to refuse care in many of these emergencies, which puts hospitals in a position of power, where the only real sole main negotiator is your insurance company
I just fail to understand how a self proclaimed leader of the free world can't figure out basic health care for their people
it's not hospitals that have done it, it's the insurance companies themselves
Like, you managed to put ppl on the moon, but can't give them basic care?
et. voila @mystic ermine - it's fairly short, worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeDOQpfaUc8

it's a fun show
The real culprit in that dynamic is the insurance companies.
but points out real issues
comedy is absolutely a legitimate vehicle for real concerns and issues
Pharma and insurance lobby hard yeah
its progressively getting harder to regulate things in america. someone is always crying oppression when we try
If the population would stand up for smth like this, lobby can't do much
Cause population votes for you, not lobby
Looks like big pharma and health insurance companies are the top 2 lobbyists in America? Am I seeing this right? LOL
democracy is its own beast with deals and laws
sounds about right
aerospace and defense is up there
Well, lobbying can be regulated too
That's how the politicians go from your average joe on the street to having 3 mansions
slowly
Our reps and stuff need to keep track of everyone they talk to and the topic and stuff
around 2000 we passed some laws about elections and who pays for them and transparency
Guess which side big pharma is on? More sick people or less sick people? 🙂
that, uh.. Caused a lot of shell companies to appear, though
using names like "Freedom of America Foundation"
so that.. Kinda worked
ish
I mean, we could pitch into stuff like #nutrition-science with orgs like the diabetes one
everytime someone talks of big pharma, i play this song in my head :3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqUZn0gWLk4

But of course we got lobby issues too
Whenever we try to do something good, industry is like, but ma joooobs
create a system, and people will find a way to game it
it's constant cat-and-mouse
and laws are slow
and rules for rulers is in favor of lobbying
meaning lobbying is one of the most effective tools of power acquisition by nature
at least in a democracy
basically, money will win, always
Who doesn't want to be able to buy political power? Sounds like a good system 😄
we're always playing from behind
but we do catch up eventually
so there's that
that's just kinda the nature of the beast
and you can't escape it no matter the country
we have different issues over here. Some big, some small
we're specifically targeting some very large issues backed by very powerful orgs, so that'll take time
and then there'll be new ways to make lots of money on the back of poor people
like charging $120 for a single textbook that's out of date the next semester for each student
or $150 for a required online part of a class
.. Just a random example. Has nothing to do with the thousands of dollars worth of textbooks on my desk at all
which will be worth $5 in a month
Hm, I wonder if Biden will actually follow through on forgiving a portion of student debt
student debt forgiveness?
I did the smart thing and went to community college and got grants, so I don't need it quite as much
but I still owe like $8k
i still owe $25k for a degree i never got because they pulled my funding half way through because i wasn't working...
i would love to get that wiped away
many, many people in my community college went to universities and owe like $30k+ to loans, etc
they definitely regret it
I think Biden was saying something like up to $10k
But that's still better than nothing.
that might cover the interest that's been collecting over the last 8 years of being in forbearance
lmao
turns out you actually have to do things for most grants
lol, rip. pay that shit off before it accumulates more I guess >_>
like attend an extra class, write essays, do community work..
Pretty sure they can still legally garnish your wages 😛
yep
Loophole detected
bankruptcy also doesn't clear student debt, which was lobbied for. Student loans were regulated aroun the '80s
before they were regulated it was rampant

Bankruptcy shouldn't void any debt
Re student dept: in germany (where education is generally free), you can get student loans by the gov, with no interest and you only have to pay 50% back (if think that's only if you finish, don't take my word for it)
Those loans are designed to cover housing and food and stuff whole you studying
Damn socialists
@shut vine yep, many people think the same. At least for student debt. That's why people who go bankrupt still owe tons of money and end up on the street. Usually dead after a few years.
happens far too often
sounds like a system that's working to me
one that kills people because they owe money
Such loans exists for a bunch of things btw, if I were to buy a house, I would go to the gov and get 50k in a loan I only need to pay half back iirc?
Don't remember
something something mobs
its working. someone's pocket is getting fuller from it @elder portal
something kneecapping
heh, if only
taxing people just drives them away, or makes them buy art
the world of fine art is a giant tax evasion
because taxes
if fine art starts being taxed, it'll become fine pickels
or something
if you tax based on land, suddenly there's land available
and suddenly less land available in another country
can't just "tax the rich"
we need them to actually pay taxes
some > none
need to make it worth their while to have land, things, etc here to tax
I keep hearing that, if it were to come to Trump being frog-marched from the WH, it would be an excellent idea to put it on pay-per-view
Might just solve the national debt
So that could help. Lol
That's a best-case timeline though
For a transfer of power
"We want renewable energy! We just don't want them in our backyards, or to damage forests putting them in"
@mystic ermine I mean, tons of land where that isn't an issue
Assuming you refering to wind, which isn't the only renewable anyways
wind and solar have the same issues, nuclear too
Nuclear has the unsolvable issue of the waste
Well, power plants in general, really, unless we find some magic pixie dust which can generate energy (outside of nuclear)
Nuclear waste can be recycled, and many countries already do
2. The U.S. generates about 2,000 metric tons of used fuel each year
This number may sound like a lot, but it’s actually quite small. In fact, the U.S. has produced roughly 83,000 metrics tons of used fuel since the 1950s—and all of it could fit on a single football field at a depth of less than 10 yards.
Yes, it's something we need to solve, but, there are already a countless options available, many which can even produce energy easily from it
solar and wind being free energy completly discredits the resources involved
Several countries in the past few months turned on their experimental fusion reactors for the first time I think
Yes, nuclear is hardly free either, none of the options are free
The only "super amazing clean" projections I've seen for wind farms generally entirely discredit the effects of production and landfil from those generators, discredits the costs of transporting these huge machines across the globe, discredits the complexities of actually getting the infrastructure needed for power generation to these sites where people can place them without having to be hounded by NIMBY'ders
We don't know if current fusion ideas work, the test reactors all require more energy to be out in than you get out of it
Since holding the plasma stable is hard
fusion is advancing, but, it's always 20 years out
It's always amazing to me how long it takes to build these test reactors
Fusion works, yield is the major thing at present, we're a lot closer than we were 5 years ago.
small nuclear plants which can operate for a few decades without refueling are already "here"
Fission plants?
yes
Gen 3 fission reactors are really efficient.
"but big scary nuclear!!!"
Of course, it's nuclear, we don't want Chernobyl or Three Mile Island.
The most annoying parts of those is that the plants where doing the measures needed to protect themselves automatically
it's human interaction which caused them to fail
Yep
Fukashima was also moronic design
if it wasn't for the diesels being underground, we wouldn't have really heard about it
But we are human, mistakes will always happen
And as it turns out, a mistake in nuclear is a giant Desaster
And we've had years upon years of learning
Nuclear is one of the safest industries out there
Modern plant designs are more fail safe than before
I hope they get liquid fuels commercial soon, cos that's cool
Think three mile island was a DRYAMB, which I think are first generation pressurized water reactors. Chernobyl was definitely first gen.
You can literally walk away from the reactor, if the reactor starts running away, the reactor running away will melt a plug which will just drain all the fuel from the plant
Gen 2 are hell of a lot safer though.
Pretty sure in both incidents they made the only bad choice that could possibly be made if I remember right.
Chernobyl was basically management plight
I mean, at what point do you run a reactor with the safety disabled and practically all the control rods ejected from the system?
Yeah, basically really dumb choice
I still think it's a shame there are only about 455 running reactors worldwide.
Oh, and 3 mile was basically a mixture of indicators for certain stuff not being available and disregarding the set protocols, from what I recall, there was a leaking pressure value, and due to the lack of measurements from the pressure control tanks, and disregarding protocols, they left a value open which the protocol told them to close, meaning that they where basically pissing all the water out of the reactor; If they woulda closed the values when they where told to, once again, we would have never heard about it
modern designs solve all these types of issues, along with proper protocols; We're actually doing a total disservice to ourselves by encouraging older reactors to renew vs being able to build new plants
Yeah aboslutely.
I used to live right next to a nuclear plant and reading about all the issues they had on the regular was always an interesting experience
GKN Neckarwestheim If someone is interested :D
Gotta say I’m not a fan of nuclear. It’s expensive and takes way too long to build.
Plus, the possibility of safety issues does add a bit of a negative here too. They have super bad optics and have the potential to be way worse than wind or solar in a disaster situation
But like, if we suddenly chose to use nuclear for renewable energy, it’d be too late by the time they’d all be built
We've still not figured out what to do with the waste of wind or solar either
Recycling stuff is in play, but, some aspects are not recyclable, e.g. the huge ass blades
Can the blades be repaired and reused?
No
But I mean, not being able to recycle the blades yet isn’t really a good reason to not move to renewables etc
They're made out of composite materials, our best options we've got that I've seen is basically shreading them for construction
But, basically, nuclear is the much safer option especially with modern developments, small scale reactors which can be up in a small portion of the time needed for large scale reactors, do less damage to the land, are afaik hitting comercial availability
I somewhat see recycling in the long term as a solved problem though. Like at some point I’m sure people would work out how to recycle anything
As long as the waste product isn’t something hella dangerous or uses up a very rare material it’s not too big an issue short term
And switching to clean energy is probably more important
All of our available options do some form of damage to the land
Yeah, which is why I think prioritising speed and minimal damage is ideal
a doc I saw other week said that the total battery capacity in like CA or something was enough to cover like 27 minutes, so, we're gonna need a lot of lithium in order to pull off solar and wind
If there’s a lot of local power generation that’s all connected to each other I imagine it’d be unlikely to get outages though?
issue in part is the concentration of sources, as well as getting a grid capable of dealing with such stuff
We don't have enough uranium for the whole world to use nuclear
We'd need to figure out thorium to buy some time or fusion for it to be really viable
CA relies a lot on solar power, but was still facing power outages as they don't have the inter-state capacity to deal with it
Nuclear is not a renewable energy source
I’m not really holding my breath for large scale nuclear fusion tbh
Part of the issue for solar is storage, the sun goes down as people go home
If the whole world was using nuclear power we'd be out of uranium in a few decades
Like I imagine we’ll get it eventually - but not in a timeframe that matters
Energy usage also goes down when the sun goes down cat
I think you’d realistically need both wind and solar
Storing power for like 12 hours is not feasible
I saw some stats, you'd need to store at least 2 days of power for it to be viable iirc
It's called energy mix for a reason
Your spike is at ~6pm
At least over here in winter, it's literally pitch black outside at that time
in part it depends on region and what the workforce is doing
if you're in a heavily office block area, the fact that you have more people to a light bulb and AC, means that you're gonna squeeze extra comfort out of these machines
as soon as people get home, they're gonna turn on their AC in summer, or turn on their heating in winter, put the oven on, etc
Well, you still don't have to store 12 hours
Now, in industrial areas, those generally have high power loads for stuff like the machinary, etc; especially if you pushed all the metal works away from fossil fuels, those places fucking eat power like... erm... I have no "clean" references here
how does that work
how can you check the status of your ballot
like how would that work
that rings a few hundred alarm bells in my head regarding election integrity o.O
so the ballots are somehow marked that they are yours?
Hey I figured out how Trump can take credit for the vaccine: Trump provided the necessary high infection rates to be able to do Phase 3 testing of the vaccine in the US.
😂
that's really interesting tbh
If your ballot is somehow identifiable your vote won't get counted here
Like if you put a signature on it
Are you just copying the shitposts from /r/conservative?
but that's still a way to identify the ballot somehow, just by having it with the envelope, isnt it?
Also, you know who the mooch is, right?
He's the guy we named the measure of Trump administration official terms after
They're all there for such short periods but his was the shortest so everyone else is "hey, at least he was there for 4 Mooches"
I think 1 Mooch was 9 days so 4 of them would be about when the EC votes
Going for the long odds, eh?
Sure, there is always a chance he manages to flip the board and we give up on democracy
It'd only be Pelosi if the EC, House, and Senate all failed to pick someone
People willing to spend some money on a laugh, you mean 😛
since when are bettors reliable sources of information lmao
Sounds like one less thing the federal government has to enforce, and something that increases personal freedoms and individual responsibility. I wonder why conservatives wouldn't vote for it? 😛
Trump would have won if he had legalized it. Whoever does is gonna score major brownie (pun intended) points with both sides.
i dont think trump will pass it if it comes to him
Of course, various industries too.
which is most of thems "public" message, but secretly smoking up in private
religious people are some of the biggest hypocrits
Any intellectual conservative I've spoken with is pro-legalization
i think the house is timing this so that it ends up on bidens desk within the first few days of his presidency
pot is like one huge uniting topic between the left and right, millions on both sides want it
religious people are some of the biggest hypocrits
evangelicals are the worst
I like both but yeah clearly one is a helluva lot worse than the other.
Weed isn't just illegal, it's classified among the worst like heroin and meth.
That's for federal scheduling too
Federally it's under the same schedule as those other hard drugs, it's crazy lol
afaik if Trump doesn't sign it the new House would have to pass another bill
I don't think they carry through to different Congresses
Trump could go out with a signature piece of legislation that would make everyone feel a bit conflicted 😛
"Screw Trump, but thanks for legal weed"
I think the title is wrong and this is a decriminalization bill
Still not allowed at a federal level but the punishment would no longer involve jail time or felonies
It's a start, though I'm sure states will continue to do it on their own.
What would happen to people that got jailed / are in jail because of weed?
I would guess nothing, they still broke a law, doesn't matter its not relevant anymore now, it was then
Unless they all get pardoned
The bill in question would expunge convictions of non-violent offenders.
yeah expunging previous records is a different topic usually, and gets harder to expunge at a federallevel if they also violated a state law. not sure how often you encounter a federal crime for weed where it was legal in the state.
so im surprised if they are bundling that with it
I was curious how the federal government could possibly enforce a law against possession or consumption itself, but apparently they can under the Interstate Commerce clause because it affects the supply and demand of cannabis-per SCOTUS.
Several states have their own laws against possession, so wouldn't be able to expunge those convictions with the federal bill.
Good old Wickard v. Filburn
Wow if Kavanaugh's language during the oral arguments is any sign he seems to be against the idea that ruling the current form of the individual mandate should also mean striking down the whole ACA
Gorsuch seems to be against the idea that they even have standing to bring the case
Then again they might be playing devil's advocate to get the arguments on the record
VRChat was a mistake? https://twitter.com/i/events/1325893783955836929
The Philadelphia site of Rudy Giuliani’s speech is being put to another use.
The individual mandate is the thing that most makes it relevant to the constitution and thus the SCOTUS to be honest.
Huh, Trump is trying to argue you shouldn't be allowed to cure ballots and get PA to throw them all out
If you had a signature issue or something you could get in touch with your local election office and correct the problem, he is suing to say that shouldn't be allowed and those votes need to be rejected
Sounds like in PA you couldn't even fix the original ballot, you could just go complete a new provisional ballot which would only be accepted after they confirmed your original one was rejected
Doesn't that mean he has even less of a case?
so whats his argument in the other states. because he still loses even if PA flips back red lol
I think he is counting on remaining ballots being counted in AZ and a recount in GA
He has cases in Nevada and Michigan too I think.
he has desires, but does he actually have a 'case' ?
I think in several states he has cases, the question is how much can be proven to satisfy legal requirements for the judge to act, then the question is if it'll be consequential anyway.
Historically if you look at challenges it's rare to find one that actually amounts to anything, however the amount of evidence in this situation is substantially more evidence than has been publicized historically in claims of election fraud to my knowledge. Is it credible? Maybe? I just don't think if it is true that it will be proven legally.
Pretty sure there are ongoing cases in Michigan and Nevada. I could be wrong too.
Also it will only take one big case to blow something like this wide open. If he wins a major case in PA and wins that state, the tide is more likely to change rapidly. Just I doubt he'll win any meaningful case.
the amount of evidence in this situation is substantially more evidence than has been publicized historically in claims of election fraud to my knowledge
Can you link to some of this evidence?
says great things about someone whos method to try to win is to deny someone who is legally qualified to vote, their vote.
"your dot on your I is higher than you normally sign, VOTE DENIED! MAGA!!!!"
Might I remind y'all about the fact that (as he claimed, anyways) of his 70M votes, 71M were legal, whereas he probably thinks none of Biden's were?
ignoring the fact there was some dead voters for trump
he's not one to talk about voter fraud in the fucking slightest when he claims he got more votes than he did, even WITH so-called illegal votes
Ga is now 12k difference, is that even recount worthy?
there's evidence of people trying voter fraud and being caught. That evidence shows that, in the hundred million (or two) a few hundred across the U.S. may be invalid, and that they were caught
15k in AZ
which seems to line up with research provided in earlier years
well doubt that many votes were counted wrongly
voter fraud risk/reward is way off. The risk is far too high for even a single extra ballot
it just doesn't really happen
so AZ/GA alone gives biden the win (lol at anyone thinking trump has even a chance at nevada)
yes, voter fraud exists, but you're looking at a couple hundred cases across the whole U.S. on average, and even those are caught
some people are stupid
PA apparently had 10 cases of attempted voter fraud this year, which was several times more than other years
a whole 10 cases
and still far more than they've had before
If the sworn affidavits of the postal worker, and the electoral observers can be backed up, this situation is slightly different than historical voter fraud.
slightly, perhaps. Not very.
maybe a couple hundred more cases this year
wooo
scary
Well if they are to be believed it's 10's of thousands.
Oh, that reminds me, one of the reports in either Wisconsin or Michigan was about backdating mail but they don't accept ballots after 8pm on election day no matter what their postmark says
10's of thousands how?
Trump/GOP is trying to invalidate tens or hundreds of thousands of actually legal ballots on the back of this couple hundred
i seriously doubt 1 post office backdating some ballots if thats even true is 10s of thousands of votes
Allegedly a PA district received a large delivery of votes from out of state, and they were all for Biden. They were delivered differently allegedly too.
Yeah I agree
NC received a large delivery of out of state ballots for Trump
all cases so far have been thrown out for citing no evidence
see, its easy to make a statement even if its not true
Uh, the specific one I'm talking about wasn't thrown out yet, but still it's one person.
with what evidence?
right now trump's entire agenda is all about spewing lies and deceit to destroy faith in the system
they dont know what truth or honor means
wont surprise me one bit someone would lie under oath to further trumps lies
"daddy trump will pardon me"
Of course, you need to back up sword statements with additional evidence in all cases.
aww 😦
Partly that's why I don't think he'll get very far, additionally if 2000 is anything to go by, the judiciary is very reluctant to get involved in elections.
We should never forget those who helped further the Trump agenda.
wow.
some people, eh?
also this
only 32 cases, though?
I thought there were more
was guessing < 100 per election, but yeah
there's a few more this year, mostly on the Trump side, because he actively told people to go and vote twice
.. fucking idiots. lol
oh, this can only go well
ooh i saw a trump supprter vote twice now gimme the money
easy way to make a million, though
lol, yeah
how well does the allegation need to hold up?
'cuz I could totally spew BS for a million
that is actually my dream job
making shit up and getting millions
That tweet tho
amazing
lmfao
ABOOSE
ABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEE
sounds trustworthy

A Pennsylvania postal worker whose claims have been cited by top Republicans as potential evidence of widespread voting irregularities recanted to U.S. Postal Service investigators.
just catching up on the latest Twitter news

some people be cray-cray
living out a fantasy where they have to murder people for their president, I see
sure he did, Trump. sure he did.
boy, most of the things Trump has said today have been blatantly false
what a day.
I mean to be fair people generally refer to the actions of the government during an administration by the sitting president
Hmm?
Like the Obama administration itself did investigate the campaign
It just wasn’t signed off by Obama himself etc
Like I’d personally see that as a mostly true tweet, rather than mostly false
Well yes, but if someone says “Bush invaded Iraq for oil”, Bush didn’t personally do the invading
Investigations happen often enough anyway, especially with a potential president. Obama wasn't sitting there looking for dirt
Trump's tweet implies that Obama wanted to try to get some dirt on him or something
Yeah, I think trump’s tweet was disingenuous but still based on underlying fact
As have his past tweets
"technically the truth" is a road to hell
Taking these tweets at face value removes meaning from them
Idk I just somewhat dislike Snopes, and this is an example of where they’ve removed context to make it seem more fake than normal
Because it’s super common for people to refer to the actions of the government during a presidents term as done by that president
I doubt the majority of people who read that thought, "well technically it's true somewhat, in that the words are correct." - they thought, "Obama was spying on Trump!"
So taking those at face value leaves us at a disadvantage
Same with "counting the votes"
We all know what he really means by those kinds of tweets
We need to reference that underlying ideal, not the one presented by the words themselves
Like yeah it’s probably not the best example of Snopes being bad, sure
Because nobody is taking those tweets at face value unless they're being pedantic
And trump was definitely meaning sketchy stuff by that
But generally they latch onto a single technicality in the post and disprove stuff based on that, which they’ve somewhat done here
Spying implies they were doing something they shouldn't be too
A Trump campaign aide told someone from an Australian embassy about the whole thing which is what started the investigation and they'd been looking in to Carter Page before he was ever a part of the campaign because it turns out Russia was trying to use him as an asset but he was too useless
^^
The Obama Administration was investigating the Trump campaign as a threat to national security, not a political opponent. That's the distinction that Trump always fails to make.
Which, I should point out, is completely within their right and power to do. When you get intel that a staffer for a political campaign could be in the pocket of a hostile foreign government, you address it.
You mean you don't just scream WITCH HUNT WITCH HUNT?
Not typically but it seems to have worked for Trump lol
Sure does. With millions ready to defend him like some sort of god-emperor.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
It amazes me that some people think he should actually be an emperor or something. He's just generally an incompetent person so I struggle with that.

Yay. Politics..
Every day this goes on it gets much less fun and much more terrifying
At this point it might actually be an attempted coup
I dunno why CSPAN seems to be debasing themselves with these lies, either. That I definitely don't understand yet
Also, "there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration" followed by dead. Fucking. Silence. For like a solid couple of seconds
Almost like none of the reporters could believe what they just heard
I mean, I can't tell if he's actually serious or not
He's very serious
That chuckle could mean both things
He has a history of wanting to get rid of the senate and house, and move that power to the president instead
Very nationalist
History of doing what he can to move as much power as possible to the president
That's not nationalist, that's authoritarian
True. Basically his ideals are that the president should have total power over everything
He's not quite in a position to do that, but he's close enough that he can do a lot of damage
Maybe totalitarian is a better description?
He already has done a lot of damage. Very extreme views
Oh, wait, that's Pompeo
Barr is who I was talking about
They look damned similar, fuck
Today in court, a Pennsylvania judge asked a lawyer for Trump point-blank whether he was alleging fraud.

lmfao
That's 592 ballots in a county Biden won by over 100,000
And even then, no proof
This seems to be a pattern
Bold claims with no evidence
I mean, we knew this already
This has been the case for four years
Outlandish claims with no backing evidence
Jan 2021 can't come fast enough
Needing to fact-check and dispute the goddamned president should never have been normalized
am i reading this wrong, it seems like goldsteins saying "no sir this lawsuit is pointless, im NOT agreeing with trump"
that is exactly what hes saying yes
They don't want to lie to a judge, you can get in trouble for that 😛
Guess they were hoping they'd come up with something before the trial date or baffle the judge with bullshit
Or they're just trying to drive donations to the "legal defense fund" which actually gets split between paying off the Trump campaign's existing debts, the RNC, and Trump's brand new "leadership PAC"
Money only goes to an actual legal defense fund after the campaign debts are paid off
This article gets better the more you read
lmao
Hyperloop seems so cool
Then you look into the details
And everything falls apart
No wonder elon musk gave that idea away for free, lol
I doubt he knows the name of any chess pieces, basket.
that assumes he's capable of making his way in there
He is absolutely running a 2024 campaign
Not because he thinks he'll win or wants the job but because the rallies give him something he never had before
And if he has a campaign he gets paid for the rallies too

yeah, I guess their original leader resigned
and their new leader is.. That.
welcome to the new KKK
They've been for a while, he was just their beard
oh, wait, no, I mis-read
original leader of one of their branches is still leading
but now he's openly-racist rather than closeted-racist
is that progress, or no?
I actually can't tell
We will no longer cuck to the left by appointing token negroes as our leaders. We will no longer allow homosexuals or other ‘undesirables’ into our ranks. We will confront the Zionist criminals who wish to destroy our civilization.
We recognize that the West was built by the White Race alone and we owe nothing to any other race
welp.
I, uhh..
I have nothing
I'm going to try and find the braincells that have fled my head after reading that, though

Lankford defended the President's many legal disputes, saying the best thing right now is for Trump to be able to go through the legal process and "get real answers" before the Electoral College casts ballots in December.
Lankford implied that if the President is not able to follow through with its legal proceedings, it might stoke conspiracies among Trump supporters.
That's a very level-headed way of thinking about the situation
more and more repubs are speaking out against trump at this point
My fear, here, is that no concession speech takes place at all. That's a different issue entirely, though
yeah that is
I definitely agree with Lankford, here, in pretty much all of his points
but it only takes a couple repubs in the senate willing to break lines, and it may not matter come inauguration, but if shit really hits the fan
in the coming months the people that remain on Trump's side will be extremists
all of the moderates and centrists who haven't conceded yet will
republicans are also slowly starting to concede
(some did to begin with, because duh)
the "proud boys" thing absolutely does not help the image of that whole.. "area"
you'll see more and more people like Yolanda, here

almost certainly a troll account, but a moderately funny one
trolls aren't exactly what we need right now, though

clearly zero respect for any form of national security
this is where I remind eveyone that every president gets a library which contains everything they've ever said and done publicly while in office. Yes, Trump, too. Yes, it will be filled with tweets.
it will be a KFC

I don't think anyone posted this yet
yeah, higher-ed favors the democratic party
meaning that more educated people tend to lean more democratic
or even libertarian
our left party is fairly right when compared to other countries
the line is meh
doesn't matter too much. The data is pretty clear
I'd wonder where the data is from, but that's also publicly-available
it's well-known the more educated people tend to vote more democratic
you should probably look into it, then
Those degrees aren't as valuable to the market but they're still educated
when you go to college, you get a well-rounded education despite the degree
it's required to take various english, math, psychology, sociology, business, and philosophy classes
no matter the degree
Missing the forest for the tregrees
people with a higher education tend to vote more democratically - there's a fair number of studies on this
one of the first was.. Looks like 1980?
oh, no, 1964, wow
degrees don't seem to matter
and I can imagine why
the "medical doctors voting for republicans" thing is covered in that graph anyway
ignoring the trend line, the data seems representative
I almost went for a business degree. Seems to be a field I'm very good at
would have been kinda fun
MBAs are the ones that decided everything should be made in China
if your goal is to make more money, it can make sense depending on the situation
They know how to make a line on a graph go up for next quarter but not how to make a company and surrounding community thrive
parts made in China are 2-50x cheaper than ones made in the U.S.
but they're almost always cheaper
getting parts made in the U.S. can also be very difficult - some parts just aren't common, here
means more time and expense
well, I don't blame the average small or medium business for buying parts from China, anyway. lol
just a money sink
for the tag, "completely made in America" which nobody really cares about anyway
I'm not as zealous about this as I'm sounding, I'm just confused by a Trump supporter would like MBAs considering their arguments
(depends on your customer base, but the average consumer doesn't care)
Then again Trump has an MBA
I know of one business that actively sources parts from the U.S., and it's difficult and incredibly expensive for them
but their customer base really cares about that, so they do it because it's ultimately worth it
it's rare for that particular customer base to make up a majority of a company's profits, though
so they, rightly, don't care about it
the way to change that is to start caring and showing you care, with your wallet
you really hate that graph, huh?
that may be true, but I have no data for that
I've also heard that people with an education tend to vote more, so I don't know
The only way Biden could get anything close to 100% of the no degree vote is if that was like downtown Detroit
So that's a weird scenario to make up 😛
is it half the country that has a degree?
also, a lot of counts for "having a degree" in the U.S. exclude anything below a 4-year
not sure why they exclude 2-years
People 25-30 are less likely to vote
The y axis on that graph says university degree so I'd say it means 4+ years
finally found some stats on college education https://educationdata.org/number-of-college-graduates
even breaks down the degree types
36% have a 4+ year degree as of 2019 then, you can use that with the earlier graph
if you count "some college, no degree" it's about 65, 70% of the population
I'm in that 70% 😛
if you only count 2-year+ it looks closer to 46%-ish
but that's of the population that has taken high-school
I'm not sure how many don't even have a high-school or equiv.
I assume it's small?
census is hard
this time, especially, it was rushed, sadly
¯_(ツ)_/¯
later on, there's a graph of percentage of population enrolled in higher ed
broken down by age range
also by race/ethnicity
graphs are fun
currently, looks like 50.5% of the population 18-19 and 54.6% of the population 20-21 are enrolled
that's not graduated - that stat is above
Iowa positivity rate was 50.68% today
"things that aren't new"
Everyone except those living in denial knew this
Man, r/Conservative is like a gold mine of salt, tears and false hope.
I hate to admit it, but it fuels me 🙂
its pretty much exactly as bad as it seems
that site crashed lol
man fuck zuck
All of the states have finally been called
We're coming for you Utah and North Carolina, you're surrounded 😛
Republicans picked up some seats in the House and possibly more coming but Democrats have hit the 218 needed for majority
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong...
"wrongthink"
says the person practicing doublespeak almost every tweet
$10 says Trump hasn't ever actually read 1984
"political" wrongthink is redundant, as wrongthink is political by nature in the book
it's a "subset" of thoughtcrime, which is a totalitarian principle from the "big brother" western government
aka Ingsoc
though applying thoughtcrime to Twitter as an organization still upholds the principle of the thing, so fair enough there
for those wanting to get the story of 1984 without reading it, there's a great 20-minute summary from Overly Sarcastic here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiGMX6-7VFE
It's the mother of all dystopias! Long before YA dystopia rose to power, before the age of Young Attractive Heroes who Rebel Against The State and Also Find Love, there was just Winston Smith - a middle-aged man in poor health who Rebelled Against The State and Also Found Love...
1984 is a pretty good read, it’s not an “old boring book”, so I’d definitely recommend actually reading it if you can
Agreed, though a lot of people just want the highlights
So at the very least, there's the highlights
Should at least know the story
The best books... are those that tell you what you know already.

What makes it impossible to pass?
