if it takes effort to explain windows to a middle aged person than linux is impossible unless you learn to use it at 5

vestal jasper
#

You're not the average consumer

thats not the point here

I can never understand people that don't use linux. 🙄

Again you're trolling

my mom had me search an e-mail from 2019 earlier today

void void
#

Again you're trolling
I'm not? lol

next wind
#

you are though

void void
#

I mean, you can think that. Doesn't mean it's true.

next wind
#

your saying that its easier to use the command prompt whenever you need to do anything mildly complicated than using an interface perfected over 10s of years

worn ember
#

perfected over 10s of years

lets not go that far

windows is easier to use and thats a fact

void void

your saying that its easier to use the command prompt whenever you need to do anything mildly complicated than using an interface perfected over 10s of years
Nope, linux != "command prompt" (a windows phrase btw, it's actually called the terminal) you don't need to use the terminal to use linux.

worn ember
void void
#

You're experience with linux actually depends on what DE (desktop environment) or WM (window manager). Like Gnome (pronounced with a hard g), you don't need to open a terminal for anything. Everything is working out of the box.

next wind
#

and guess why i dont know what any of that is

#

because i dont need to on windows

void void
#

But if you install something like i3 or dwm as a new user, you're screwed pretty much.

#

because i dont need to on windows
bc on windows, you don't have choice.

next wind
#

why would i need a choice, its already perfected

#

or near perfect

void void
#

why would i need a choice, its already perfected
debatable

next wind
#

unless your running a server, windows is better

slender jay
#

windows is far from perfect

#

but its easier to use for the average person

next wind
#

its far from perfect, yet its the best for the average consumer

#

yeah

void void

why would i need a choice, its already perfected
Tiling window managers would like to speak with you.

lol

next wind

yeah i have no idea what that means

void void

because again, i dont need to

void void
#

you're uneducated

people need to be more educated about their computers.

next wind

uneducated for not knowing how to use a os that i dont want to know about pepega

void void
#

uneducated for not knowing how to use a os that i dont want to know about pepega
What I'm talking about is os-independent.

slender jay
#

yeah because my mom would make use of tiling windows

#

come on dude

void void
#

yeah because my mom would make use of tiling windows
it was just an example

next wind
#

and it was a bad example because its useless

void void
#

I'm not saying your everyday person is gonna use a tiling window manager, lol

slender jay
#

everything that you will list i can counter

#

with a mom argument

#

because its a fact that 90% of people

#

dont know how to move the mouse

void void

otherwise you are clearly delusional

unique snow
#

I personally think there should be a rule regarding premium plugins with closed source, first of all that the source has to be available to Spigot staff. Second by using Spigots transaction service if you don't provide support for the latest "stable" Spigot within 3 months they take ownership and republish your source code under GPL3/MIT.

limber knotBOT
#

first is true I believe

unreal quarry
#

I personally think there should be a rule regarding premium plugins with closed source
there is one. it's called the GPLv3. No one listens to that, though 😛

limber knotBOT
#

closed source? thin fuckin ice pal. not giving source on request? I'm calling my lawyers

minor badge
#

lol

#

you wont pay for it, nobody will; its a spigot plugin

#

i just hope hangar will require FOSS; paywall is fine (mcMMO style), or just do it freemium where you have a paywall for help

unique snow
#

There's a license for plugin authors to abide by?

limber knotBOT
#

Yes, GPL

#

Or MIT

minor badge
#

GPLv3 requires the dependent to use GPLv3 or a GPL compat licence

unique snow
#

I thought it was only derived works?

limber knotBOT
#

Are plugins not derived works?

unreal quarry
unique snow
#

Well API usage is a very grey area.

void void
#

Plugins still use bukkit derived code. It’s all in legal murky water and basically unenforceable because no one cares and google vs Oracle is still happening
that's still going on?

vagrant niche
#

Licenses only matters if you have $$ to sue or you are being sued

void void
#

surprising, but you know what's not surprising? How much you can save when you switch to geico, 15 minutes can save you 15% or more on car insurance.

minor badge
#

well its a link requirement on Bukkit, and as it doesnt have the exception clause (afaik?), it requires GPL

unique snow
#

I mean, I always thought this way too.. that if you utilize something that's GPLv3 you technically need to open source it. However I'm not an expert on the legalities.. I've read enough to indicate using an interface licensed under it is very hard to win even if you have the money.

#

Also does spigot use bukkit or craftbukkit, or both?

grand pewter
#

craftbukkit implements bukkit

and spigot is a fork of craftbukkit

ashen cliff

potent fossil

sounds accurate

limpid comet

So, I'm working on running my servers in a docker container. Does it make sense for the container to do this?

  1. Clone the server git repo (holds latest configuration + the server binaries and plugins)
  2. Download the latest builds of our in-house plugins from our jenkins server
  3. Run
twin lagoon
#

docker or kubernetes

spice finch

Docker

ancient wave
#

@ashen cliff we aren’t reading the same article

twin lagoon

because for kubernetes, you should use init containers

#

but for docker, you could do that yeah

ashen cliff
#

That's why I asked, what card.

potent fossil
#

i mean it makes sense for the image to do that, sure

limpid comet
#

I'm gonna use docker for now, then I'm gonna work on learning k8s and stuff on my own server

ancient wave
#

According to a new Device ID listing confirmed by leaker _rogame on Twitter, we have some preliminary specs on NVIDIA's next-gen Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3080

twin lagoon
#

ok well once you use kubernetes

#

can fuck that entire part off

#

and then use init containers

limpid comet
#

init containers, I see. I assume they contain the basic stuff for the server to work?

potent fossil
#

the point is nvidia hasn't officially released shit so it'd be real fuckin nice if ppl didn't come here claiming otherwise. if it's tech gossip it's tech gossip.

twin lagoon
#

no they're just containers that run before starting your actual deployment image

limpid comet
#

Ahh I see

#

looking at the docs now

#

Thanks

#

So the init container would do all the stuff I said previously, and then the image container would actually run/manage the server?

twin lagoon
#

yes

limpid comet
#

That sounds perfect, thanks

#

I do have one more question that I've been thinking about

#

When it comes to servers automatically spinning up a server for a minigame, are these custom solutions or are they done through k8s

twin lagoon
#

custom solutions

limpid comet
#

Ahh I see, that makes sense then

#

They communicate with k8s in some way, I assume, to actually run the server though, yeah?

twin lagoon
#

k8s api

limpid comet
#

perfect

#

alright I'm done 😄 thanks for your wealth of knowledge

potent fossil

limpid comet
#

A plugin running on the bungee network would manage routing players to these newly spun servers, right?

potent fossil
#

yep

twin lagoon
#

si

limpid comet
#

awesome now I have an idea of what I need to do

potent fossil
#

from your plugin you talk to k8s, ask it to make your container, its like ok 'heres ip' (theres more to it than this obv) then you're like 'ok player go to ip bye'

limpid comet
#

awesome. K8s seems super appealing because if we ever need to expand I can just get more hardware, install the basic k8s stuff and configure it to communicate with the master node
