#

sec

heady spear
#

math is for nerds lmao

woven otter
#

Are you implying that you're not a nerd

heady spear
#

The book we use in theory of computation is freaking bad like oh my gosh I hate it

woven otter
#

yeah 1127 pages

heady spear
#

1127 is not bad

#

That's probably the same as my physics + math handbooks combined

woven otter
#

I wouldn't say it's special just the fact that it covers so much

heady spear
#

It's that that it's all in the same book, I don't like carrying around two handbooks

#

is it any good?

woven otter
heady spear
#

tbh most of them are exactly the same

#

it's a collection of formulas and data basically

#

it's not a textbook, it's a handbook.

woven otter
#

^

#

Isn't that Carnot's theorem?

heady spear
#

This is the entire thermo section lel

woven otter
heady spear
#

I’ve only used this book in one exam and idk if I even used it, because I have another one for engineering physics

#

The math one is way better but we’re never allowed to use it

#

O right I used this for relativity too

woven otter
#

I had 3 small handbooks on thermo for each law of thermodynamics pretty much

heady spear
#

I’m kinda happy I’m doing computer science. The math is super ez lel

#

All continuous math suck

#

Discrete math is bae

void void
#

i have to take 4 years of calculus for cs

#

(as well as discrete)

woven otter
#

lol

void void
#

why? i have no idea

#

calc 1-4

heady spear
#

I kinda know why

woven otter
#

math was actually interesting when I had it

void void
#

i believe in my school they call multivar calc = calc 4

#

but no tsure

#

intro probably

heady spear
#

Well, first of all, a lot of it might be fairly useful. But it's because most programs are designed around abstraction models

void void
#

idk

#

haven't done it yet

#

im in precal lol

#

i have 4 years ahead of me

#

i have precal, calc 1, 2, 3, 4

heady spear
#

You need to learn abstraction to be good at computer science. So, most programmes just throw in all the math that they can justify

void void
#

i'd like to think im quite competent with abstraction

heady spear
#

That's where the trend of teaching CS students calculus comes from. I had to read 5 papers about it .-.

#

Not abstraction like OOP, but abstraction as a formal concept, btw

void void
#

yes

heady spear
#

Most people are horrible at working with abstractions. The more mathematics you've gone through, the better you'll be with the formal reasoning

#

It's sort of a trick to force your brain to develop

#

So you should be happy that you're doing a bunch of calculus.

void void
#

yeah, just checked

#

at my school

#

"Multivar Calc" <=> "Calc 4"

heady spear
#

I have to do precalc, differential calculus, integral calculus, multivariate calculus, differential equations and analytical geometry

#

Oh, and probably complex analysis too

void void
#

not sure, i can look in the class search

#

lemme see

#

if they describe it enough

#

unlikely

heady spear
#

Calc 2 was fine, but they decided to mix it with analytical geometry and that fucking sucked

void void
#

ok sorry, im in a weird position where im trying to do most of my shit at a community college and then transfer to uni

#

the uni has calc1-4

#

community college has calc 1-3

#

so calc 1,2 at the uni = calc 1 in the community college
calc 3 = calc 2
calc 4 = calc 3

heady spear
#

We had to take discrete mathematics but they want us to take shit like algebraic structures and codes too, and number theory

void void
#

that's how they map it

heady spear
#

but those are notoriously hard here

limber knotBOT
#

@lusty hedge [Auto] We're now known as Paper.

void void
#

yeah, the uni does trimesters rather than semesters

#

so that may be why

heady spear
#

We covered calc 1 through 3 in one semester .-.

#

Well, we only did maths for the entire semester

#

nothing else

void void
#

so the 4 classes i have to take are actually calc1-3 and then linear algebra and differentials

heady spear
#

40h of math every fucking week lol

woven otter
#

sounds like an average week of a math student

heady spear
#

Well, so the first course was experimental sciences, which was fucking strange. Then we just did math for the rest of the semester, so it was a giant class basically

#

Our first year here is the exact same as the first year for the math students

#

so I mean, ye it does mtm 😛

woven otter
#

did you start to hate math after that

heady spear
#

If I stay for a year after getting my masters in computer engineering, then I can get a bachelors in mathematics too. Then I'll get three degrees out of this shit hole :3

#

so tbf I really do like math, I just like discrete mathematics way more than I like continuous mathematics

#

Analysis was kinda miserable here ngl

#

I haven't taken linear algebra yet though, because for some reason they want us to take that the 4th semester like ok I guess?

woven otter
#

in one year? 🤔

#

how does that work

heady spear
#

In my 5 years here I'm covering what a math student would cover in 2 years of their bachelors

woven otter
#

is that some special course

heady spear
#
  • some extra formal mathematics because of the computer science requirements
woven otter
#

studies I mean

heady spear
#

what do you mean?

woven otter
#

oh wait

#

I can't read I guess

heady spear
#

our degrees are kinda super weird tbh

#

So I am taking a combined bachelors and masters, which is 5 years

woven otter
#

so by doing bachelors + masters in 5 years you cover what a math student would cover in 2 years

heady spear
#

so I get a bachelors in computer engineering and a masters in computer engineering

woven otter
#

so you only have to study 1 year to finish math bachelors

heady spear
#

this degree also covers most of the requirements for a 3 year maths undergraduate degree

void void
#

i also need to do the full path of either physics or chem

#

i chose chem, but i kinda want physics, but not sure

heady spear
#

Because the last year they have no requirements here, they have loads of options. So I get to choose my courses for 1.5 semesters, then just do the degree project and boom

void void
#

(these are just reqs for the uni lmao :( )

heady spear
#

three degrees without too much extra effort lol

woven otter
#

that sounds nice

heady spear
#

Yes, two bachelors and a masters

#

🤷 Idk if I wanna, but it's an option

void void
#

why not mufaka

#

careful guys

woven otter
#

CS bachelors + masters + bachelors in math right?

heady spear
#

ye kinda

void void
#

we're gonna summon fr*s**f

woven otter
#

wat

heady spear
#

But tbh I'm probably gonna apply for doctorate positions instead

#

Because I don't want to spend an extra year as a piss poor student, you know?

woven otter
#

do both at the same time

heady spear
#

yeah no that sounds like hell lol

woven otter
#

challenge accepted?

heady spear
#

we also have a licentiate degree, which is half a Ph.D

#

so only two years

#

There's a grad student opening for a Ph.D in Finnish

#

But the stipends for doctorate students are kinda meh. You'd make way more by just entering the workforce

#

Yeah. I guess it's alright though. It's only for 4 years, and it's a good time investment too

void void
#

lol apparently there was a study recently asking us grads if they would spend a week in jail to erase student loan debt

#

and it was almost unequivocally yes

heady spear
#

I'm trying to study but I can barely hear my own thoughts. All I can hear is that crappy ass music from my neighbours, and a bunch of dumb screaming bitches >:(( Why the hell would you have a party in a tiny studio apartment at 7pm on a Thursday

void void
#

why wouldn't you

woven otter
#

put on some white noise/brown noise/etc on head phones

heady spear
#

idk maybe because I have school and I don't want to flunk out of this place lmao

void void
#

heady spear
#

My neighbours will never be able to graduate. They spend their entire fucking days blasting music and screaming like fucking morons. I'm starting to doubt they even go here .-.

woven otter
#

he's a raging nerd

#

heady spear
#

no, I am just fed up with disrespectful morons. They also put their trash in the corridors so everything stinks

#

I mean I don't mind if they party sometimes but it's 4 times a week from 7pm to 7am and it's getting kinda annoying tbh

void void

heady spear

In computer programming, assembly language (or assembler language), often abbreviated asm, is any low-level programming language in which there is a very strong correspondence between the instructions in the language and the architecture's machine code instructions. Assembl...

#

@mental topaz Yes, you can dynamically add servers to BungeeCord

#

lol needed to fix the minecraft-client port

#

then it semi-worked... the client SIGSEGVed after a few minutes, but my laptop is unstable with FreeBSD compared to Ubuntu

#

So something FreeBSD is doing is causing my laptop grief

shell vine
#

i think the dynamic adding is only waterfall

#

right

peak dirge
#

It also works on vanilla bungeecord

#

Waterfall just exposes a nicer API

ProxyServer#getServers() is mutable. That's how you get your dynamic servers.

But since Minecraft runs on FreeBSD, that's a major requirement for me to use it out of the way.

peak dirge
#

@mental topaz That's all you really need to do

limber knotBOT
#

you mean port forwarding, NAT is just for translating packets from external to internal. Shouldn't really need to mess with NAT. Just need to open the firewall for that port

#

But yes, it should work if you have the port forwarding being the same for both external and internal

proud lance
#

NAT translates packets entering your network into private IP address and packets going out of your internal network to your public ip address

#

you don't point your internal network IP to bungee

#

if that answers your question, if you want me to provide an example let me know

#

Is the bungeecord instance in the same LAN or internal network as the backend servers?

#

or is it with a different host and you are hosting the backend in your internal network

#

If your public IP is 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server for this example), your bungee/waterfall server is at 10.0.0.2 (your internal private IP), running on port 25565. You would make a port forwarding rule on your router to point all requests coming in under 8.8.8.8 for port 25565 to go to 10.0.0.2, port 25565.

#

If your backend servers run on the same machine as bungee, then you would tell bungee your lobby/world/game servers are at localhost with a different port for each one.

#

If they are on a different machine entirely (example ip 10.0.0.3), you would point your bungee proxy to 10.0.0.3 with the port of the paper/spigot/vanilla, etc backend servers.

#

Does that make sense?

#

8.8.8.8:25565 (Public IP) -> 10.0.0.2:25565 (Bungee/Waterfall Server) -> 10.0.0.3:25565/10.0.0.2:25565 (Paper Server)

limber knotBOT
#

NAT = Network Address Translation since private ip's behind routers can not be accessed externally, your router translates packets IP destination which would be the router IP and changes it to the IP in the internal network, it does it the opposite way around too. You can explicitly tell the router which packets should be routed where via port forwarding rules or let your router do it, which it just sends the packet to all

#

machines on the internal network and one of them should respond.

#

but sometimes that last method doesn't work so you setup port forwarding rules

#

all you need to worry about is the bungee server

#

all connections are proxied through it, so it doesn't matter where in the internal network your MC servers are at

#

as long as the bungee server can reach them

#

so that means your MC servers don't need to be publicly accessible, just the bungee server ;)

proud lance
#

Well they need to be accessible by the bungee server

limber knotBOT
#

that is what I said :)

#

as long as the bungee server can reach them, that is all that matters lol

#

sometimes routers put the port forwarding stuff under NAT

proud lance
#

Port forwarding is basically telling pointing a port on your router/firewall what port to listen to on an internal network

#

NAT is for IPs

#

so for example you don't need to run your internal minecraft servers on port 25565

#

you could run them on port 60000

#

but still tell your router hey, forward all requests on port 25565 to port 60000

#

have your terminal big and theirs small

void void
limber knotBOT
#

you can use the screen acl and enable multiuser in screenrc

#

and you can easily attach to others screens without using su

#

the acl part can be done automatically using screenrc file as well if you know how and you just add the users you want to be able to access the screen

#

but, you could just add the user after the screen is created too which might be easier

merry talon
#

why use screen in 2019

heady spear
#

tmux baby

limber knotBOT
#

well, the advantage of screen is that its available out of the box, the other is you can send commands directly into a screen not sure if tmux allows this or if its something it still can't do

#

Screen does more than tmux, but tmux is a better terminal multiplexer

heady spear
#

Lol I was rushing to uni because I overslept only to find out my prof has moved the lecture by 2h

#

I guess I can go home and sleep yay

#

You can send commands into a tmux session

#

We use it to control our servers via discord :p

limber knotBOT
#

ah so they did update it to allow that

#

that is cool

#

just sudo a user, but generally you shouldn't be using root anyways

#

sudo (user) -H (command here) but the user you sudo needs to be able to execute the script in question

#

so you could just chown the script to the user you will run it as

#

you could optionally just use su (user) and it will change you to that user

#

what command are you using to run the script? and have you made the script executable?

#

you could either do sh /home/user/server/start.sh or you could do ./home/user/server/start.sh

#

does it give you an error message?

#

I think its a permissions issue

using ls -l will tell you the perms it has as well as who owns it

Noticed that enchantment listing is handled a bit differently on paper compared to vanilla minecraft

minecraft list it by the order you add the enchantment while on paper it's listed alphabetically

anyone know if this is a paper or spigot thing? and how can I change it to vanilla minecraft behaviour?

void void
#

are you talking solely about how the names appear on the items

sharp pagoda
#

yes

void void
#
  1. dont know which software does it, would need to dig into patches though I don't recall any paper specific patches dealing with alphabetization of enchantment names on items

  2. you can't, though a plugin can probably step in and change appearance of enchantments by using some trickery

addendum: this seems like a antiproblem. as in, not a problem. something so miniscule that it shouldn't matter.

#

try a plugin, probably will need a custom one. if not, you'd need to edit the server software.

sharp pagoda
#

for sure, I know it's such a small cosmetic thing, just curious to see if there was already a solution out there

void void
#

actually yes, probably. never noticed that part of the patch

#

if it's really necessary for you and a plugin can't do it, fork paper and edit the patch, build your jar and run that

#

do note if you do so, you're maintaining your own paper and will need to update it as paper updates

#

though a plugin can probably do something ¯_(ツ)_/¯

sharp pagoda
#

a plugin is def simpler but the idea of patching paper's interesting, might explore that

#

thanks for the help

void void
#

yea if you patch paper you have more control over your own server and sometimes it's a lot easier to just patch the server than make a plugin

#

some folks here do that

#

but it does take a good amount of technical know-how

sharp pagoda
#

it's what us unemployed cs students are for :)

heady spear
#

Once you get familiar with the patching tool it’s really not that complicated tbh

@shell vine the only thing I noticed is that the chunk you are entering to the left has more chunk updates going on then the one on the right

Hey electroniccat, you may have a better idea about this than me. With PacketPlayOutGameStateChange, using the key 7 and 8 gives pretty cool sky colours. The wiki notes that 7 is the primary value for changing colours and 8 simply changes the brightness, which isn't always the case. I'd like to know if you think it's possible to change these values server-side, so we don't always have to send packets.

gilded shell
#

@prime pawn what plugin is that from?

atomic kettle
prime pawn
#

@gilded shell I use my own, but I got the idea from SkyChanger. I decided to make my own as SkyChanger only utilizes "7" for the packet and not 8.

limber knotBOT
#

not sure which wiki you got that information from, but the protocol states that key 7 is for fade value and key 8 is for fade time which is the amount of ticks for the sky to fade. Key 7 only takes a value of 1 or 0. 1 = dark and 0 = bright

prime pawn
#

I didn't get it from a wiki 🙄 I got it from trying the packet myself.

#

Wanna know a fun fact? Setting it from 0 to -1 determines the star's size

gilded shell
#

huh thats fun

limber knotBOT
#

well you said the wiki notes

fallen jungle
#

Wait you can change sky color? 🤔

prime pawn
#

frostalf, take another look at the "value" part, carefully this time.

#

High values cause it to lag, due to excessive rain splash particles. Using this packet in the nether results in no rain. Same for using it in a desert biome.

#

Surely there's a way to change it server-side.. when doDaylightCycle is true, the sky just goes across 1 second then goes back.. almost like the way you get teleported back when the server declines your move requests

#

Having custom skies that transition from a custom day/night cycle would be pretty sicc

woven otter
#

what exactly are you looking for

prime pawn
#

Basically what we use for PacketPlayOutGameStateChange except instead of sending packets, let the server handle the packets by changing it server-side.

limber knotBOT
#

generally a forums is good enough and can generally these days easily double as a CMS

shell coyote
#

Yeah I'm integrating a forum built into my CMS

#

I know Xenforo is a good option

#

I'm just making a minecraft oriented one so you have multiple themes all in the mc server style

limber knotBOT
#

if you have the money for it, but most don't so generally phpbb and smf are still the better options free wise and allowing easy customization

#

really what would be nice between the forums and CMS's out there, would be more pre-made themes geared to MC lol

yeah that's what I'm doing haha

limber knotBOT

worn ember
#

how does it track tho?

void void
#

you add it to your app (JS in my case), and it listens for fatal errors and sends them up

#

as for java you'd have to send it in your catch blocks

#

and they have other sdks as well

worn ember
#

yeh i saw the vid. so you still need to add them manually to the try catch in java?

void void
#

i believe so

#

but maybe not

#

haven't tried it

worn ember
#

interesting non the less

void void
#

yep sentry example for java

#
import io.sentry.Sentry;

public class Application {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        Sentry.init("your dsn");

        try {
            runSomething();
        } catch (Exception e) {
            Sentry.capture(e);
        }
    }
}
worn ember
#

i see

void void
#

as for my app, it runs nuxt so i really didn't do much to actually integrate it besides install the integration and configure it

#

yarn add @nuxtjs/sentry, configure, push. and it just works

#

so idk how the js actually works, but i assume it's doing something weird to global listen for errors

worn ember
#

i'd assume so

#

JS is always that weird kid in the class

void void
#

ok it makes sense

#

js has GlobalEventHandlers.onerror which you can listen to

#

but you can also try/catch in js

worn ember
#

thats actually pretty useful

#

doesnt that crash the app in the end tho

#

since its not caught

void void
#

depends on the error

#

if the app can continue, then it will and js just complains in the console

#

otherwise it'll die

worn ember
#

hmm from what i remember exceptions always crash the app in JS

#

maybe not in node or whatever

void void
#

for nuxt they do

#

it displays an error page

#

so i mean lel

#

idk

worn ember
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

cant you just get the stacktrace from the output then?

void void
#

well sure, but this is for prod when say im asleep and a user is using the app and gets an error

#

i can just check sentry and see the full trace l8r

worn ember
#

makes sense

void void
#

it also tracks releases by commit hash (if configged)

#

so you can see which commit the error is from

#

and then when you push you can "FIXES PROJ-ID" to close the issue in sentry

so we can all boo at the guy fucking production

Well... let's just say that my motherboard absolutely hates getting booted into anything that's not Windows

#

Arch works fine and I can boot from GRUB... but the firmware ignores my desire to boot GRUB by default and just boots Windows.
