Information here about the upcoming release of Disney's card game Lorcana.

#

So, the May edition of Game Trade magazine has released details on how Disney Lorcana will be played

#

Along with some new card images

#

These were posted in the Lorcana subreddit

#

First, the card explanation

Cards cost ink, you get ink by discarding a card at the start of a turn

#

Ink color has to match as I understand it

#

The objective of the game is to gather lore. 20 lore wins the game.

#

You'll start with 7 cards and draw one each turn. You then discard one for ink and then can play cards into your inkwell

#

You then send characters to quest for lore

#

By exerting them (tapping) for the lore printed on them

#

Which is the diamond things you see on the right in the card text

#

The risk? Well, you can also challenge your opponent's characters and banish them from the game. However, you can only attempt to banish a character who has been exerted (tapped).

I like the looks of this

#

Seems easy enough to understand, and character abilities are going to carry a lot of the complexity load

#

Eww, five rarities

We also now have all the (at launch) ink colors

#

Described as Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Steel

#

Actually, looking harder, I see a better look at that card explanation chart, so let's go with that instead

#

You do have to discard color for same color unless the card specifies it can be for any

#

If I recall correctly, decks are limited to 2 colors

#

Obviously this is mostly surface stuff but a much better idea of where this will head

According to the copy, players (called illumineers) are racing to be the first to gather 20 lore. Each illumineer begins with seven cards in their hand, each drawn from a personal 60-card deck. Beginning with the first round of play, illumineers take cards from their hand to create a pool of ink, the game’s energy resource. Like land in Magic: The Gathering, ink is then used to summon creatures and to cast spells. Decks are each composed of no more than two colors of ink, and can be purchased as pre-constructed starter decks.

#

So similar to BSS, the action economy's controlled by your mana being a physical object that you have to balance card play vs keeping your pool topped off

Huh, I just realized this might be the first game I play that has best 2 out of 3 rounds.

Word also is that there is going to be a live gameplay demonstration at GAMA (the tabletop game trade show) in 2 weeks, so probably even more is coming soon

#

So characters, items and actions

#

Actions also have a subset: Songs

#

Songs can be played either by paying the ink cost or if you meet a condition in the text to play it for free

#

There also is a free discard at the beginning of the game: you can choose to discard how ever many cards you want and redraw to 7, followed by shuffling your deck

#

Damage from banishing attempts do remain on characters until either the character is banished or the counters are removed

#

Also, you can do multiplayer games

#

Whenever an ability requires more than one player to do something at the same time, start with the player whose turn it is, then proceed to the left until each affected player has done their action

Multiplayer is pretty pog

Honestly the lack thereof in Pokemon has been a big hurdle in my playing it since so many of my friends are into TCGs via Magic
