I'm pretty sure you have to complete a goal in mergecrafter first, although I forgot exactly what :p

from what I'm getting, you need to merge 500 times in mergecrafter to get the pickaxe

I don't really know, as I don't really play mergecrafter. But, there might be a stats menu somewhere showing how many times you have merged something.
