I think it would be a good idea because it would hide some of the imperfections and holes too. You can stain it to match whatever stain you used on the boards.

I also think a nice coat of polyurethane would really pull it all together and give it a subtle, but classy sheen to it. But anyway, cheers and enjoy your beast!
