Simply cannot smelt with heated (copper) Large Metalbars (other metals untested)
It does not matter what is selected for the large metal bar, sword/hammer/pick-axe/handle, you will be able to hit the bar to a point, and then nothing happens, other than fatigue increasing

No, i cannot see them as that was removed, though dots appear to be irrelevant for medium and small bars

when was that removed?? like the day before you posted this i was playign and they were there.
the dots appear depending on what you're making.. hilts and guards don't use them. i've never seen them on hitls of guards. but always on blades and heads.

Look at the recent patch on steam. The white dots now require a specific tool.
(Without that tool, apprently, you just have to hit the bar 3 time on the anvil to forge your item)

Ye, you can just smack it wherever (where the dots normally arent) and you either forge the item, or forge junk... however with the large bar, nothing is forged.
