there are two parts - charms have depth, upgrades don't as much

Its very much possible that the crests are going to be those upgrades. So some might make the needle faster, but not as strong, or strong but slow. Then the tools and amount you can carry could be balanced to the needle strength.

basically just charmes but simplified as they all are 1 "notch" (just upgrades) and theres like 10-15max found in the game like charmes, and you can put a certain amount on your needle depedning on the number of "notches" you have (probably wont be find like charm notches, since its not stupposed to affect gameplay that much as tools) and like you start with 0 and get your first with your first upgrade, to a max of like 4, and they give buff like said DMG, Attack Speed, one could be like Sbody, range... (Could be more general and also affect your silk abilities, making some of them be useful as way to switch between two silk abilities, as the normal one without nothing on and the special one with the "charm" upgrade, could be cool)

Basically there are a bunch of base skills that you unlock through the main progression with optional modifiers that you can access with skill points. Modifiers are situational, not upgrades, and you can swap between them fairly freely. It's not exhaustive, but has meaningful effects on moment-to-moment gameplay, especially against enemies who interact with certain things like elemental damage in different ways

My second favorite might be Super Metroid. Would say Rain World but that game was so overly tedious in certain ways, mods would probably help my enjoyment of it a lot if I played again.
