it did in a prior version of the story, where the protagonist adopted a child who died and then found her mother as a side quest while carrying out his world-saving duties; thus developing a relationship in a more natural way. This came with the burden of making the underworld and the transition between life and death pretty clear in the story however

the last part kind of seems like an inevitablity and would make more sense to develop it and go forth with the original idea
