The reason I constantly tell people I listen to "fart music" is because my music taste is majority composed of EDM, a genre most people don't really like and often criticized for overly aggressive sound design. I was talking to a friend and they pointed out that plenty of EDM songs, particularly subgenres of dubstep have sound design somewhat reminiscent of farts (think wubs and dubs during long notes)

I adopted the term because calling the music I listen to "fart music" humorously lowers the expectation that, if they heard the songs I like, they would also enjoy it, without neglecting to describe the music that I listen to.

Pretty much: I listen to mostly EDM, most people think it's stupid, so I call it "fart music" to keep expectations low without sacrificing specificity
