i havent played it yet but i heard that in Far Cry 5, you can literally encounter something every 2-5 minutes

and its probably one of those things where the devs (with their intended audience) feels like they need to chase the players attention span so they bombard you with content like this

so much that people were complaining that things were happening too fucking often

oh walk a road for 1 minute? bear attack

you kill the bear? next 30 seconds youll probably encounter the resistance fighting a bunch the cultists

sometimes its enough to take in the scenery and ambience without being bombarded by some tunes or the gameplay loop.

When it comes to immersive-ness I also think of giving the player uninterrupted control. Matthewmatosis points out that in Dark Souls you can go hours without witnessing a cutscene which is very important. Its also why I think its a good thing HK only interrupts your gameplay with a cutscene once

for what its worth those rules do work to an extent given how popular the series still is

and your average gaming dad who plays 2 hours a day isnt probably gonna complain with that type of density

but FC5 was apparently just, bad with it

but yeah going back, for all the complaints from some individuals that HK is too "boring" or "aimlessly wandering around", its fun to see that a lot of people see that as a big positive

like during a thread about Hollow Knight in a subreddit (this was way way back), someome complained that HK didnt enough direction and youre just mindlessly wandering until you hit the next thing, and claimed "having to make your players wander around aimlessly is plain bad game design yada yada and im baffled what people see in this"

and the next reply said that, its exactly what he loves about HK, it reminds him of his outside trips of just wandering and camping in the wilderness and why the game resonated to him so much. That constant wanderlust just being satiated with a massive pointer telling you where to go
