Dark Vessel, having escaped from the Abyss and out of Deepnest, lived out in dangerous non-Hallownest territories before finding the mantis traitors. Their lord kept them on the order of Radiance, who hoped to turn them against the Pale King by feeding them infection. this way DV is trained and molted, but before they can go to prime stage Radiance detected a sense of disloyalty and decided to get rid of them somehow. In retaliation they killed a mantis traitor and obtained their cloak (they tried to kill Traitor Lord but failed)
