The more I program, the more I come to realize how dependent a good programmer must be on those around him or her. Due to the flexibility of computer science and the variance in software, there is rarely ever a program that only requires knowledge in computer science. Furthermore, since a single person cannot have mastery over all subjects, different people with different and diverse backgrounds are needed to progress. Even purely programming can rarely be done by a single person and usually requires a group of people with excellent communication skills, just like most other big projects. For example, modding Hollow Knight is difficult because the developers of the game chose an extension to Unity which allows them to program more visually. Modders do not have access to this program and because of this, at first modding was incredibly limited and time consuming. Over time, the Hollow Knight modding team grew and each new member brought his or her own skills to the table. A couple people created the Modding API which makes code written to edit the game far more readable by others. Someone else created a program called the FSM Reader which reads the game's files and recreates the visualization the developers originally had when making the game. Another person made the ModInstaller which turns the installation of a mod from cumbersome and confusing to as simple as a click of a button and allows for all mods to be stored in one spot. Without all these people uniting and putting their skills to use, the modding scene of Hollow Knight would be nowhere as active as it is today. It is these types of interactions while programming that have really shaped how important I view communication in computer science.
