It won because ok well there's this game called iterative prisoner's dilemma, and I remember that game the strategy that won was a very simple 2 line program, so I made void plague very simple too. it attacked if there was an enemy in front and otherwise it ate as much as possible and reproduced if it had enough food to.
it was about 20 lines of code
the creatures were not cognisant of each other or of the amount of food availble, they just behaved like bacteria, and turns out bacteria are very successful creatures
