I've had my laptop freeze once while in a laptop bag that contained heat really well. and that's the one time I've ever in my history seen a cpu shutoff from getting too hot and not just underclock itself.

and as gaming hardware gets better but my setup remains at 1080p 60 it will only get easier

You might be able to fix it right now. Open your case, blow out any dust from the CPU fan and heat sync. Also check that the heat sync is pressed all the way down on the CPU properly (they can come slightly loose over time) might totally fix it
