It's very likely that they're using the particle/additive shader for it

you'd have to change the actual shader to something like particle/multiply in order to get it to be black

but in my experience Unity really doesn't like changing shaders through code. it's possible though

black is considered transparency for additive though

so you're probably going to need to find the asset in-game and replace its shader with a different one

I suspect the modcommon having way more downloads thing is because when people decide they're sick of mod x and wanna try mod y they uninstall everything, including modcommon. but they don't uninstall the modding api since the modinstaller doesn't give them any buttons to do that. And then when they install mod y it redownloads modcommon. AKA the charts looking weird is a problem between the chair and keyboard of our users and not a bug with the mod installer.
