this depends on what you're working with. If it's just complex numbers you get +/- i, but then if you're working with quaternions, you'll get +/- i, j, or k. and you'll get more and more solutions if you're working with octonions, sedenions, or other number systems in the cayley dickson construction. but quaternions are only really used for computer science stuff and quaternionic analysis barely exists at all due to multiplication not being commutative, so usually, solutions to x^2 + 1 = 0 is either no solutions or +/- i
