Also loved this one, guess i would agree it doesn't add much to an already famous origin, but for me its one of the best tellings of it. It shows Franks grief to the point of near suicide and also how the system failed him. He wasn't some psycho looking for an excuse; he wanted Justice that was never delivered. And his first War Journal entry is just epic:

||"McTeer wouldn't approve, but I tried it his way. I tried it Lavianos way too. I trusted in systems and promises that were not up to the task. I tried it everyone's way. Everyone's-- except mine"||

Now what I’m going to say is going to be an extremely weird and invalid criticism, I am completely aware of this, but I think the reason I didn’t enjoy it as much is because I’ve read a lot more modern Punisher and this story just doesn’t fully align with how Frank is portrayed in those comics. And yes I know this is absolutely dumb criticism bc obviously this came before, so if anything it’s a reason to dislike some of the modern comics, but still since I read this later it kinda feels like a puzzle piece that doesn’t quite fit yk?

Not an actual complaint about the comic, moreso an explanation I think of why I didn’t like it as much

#

Though it’s still a nice telling of his origin, that’s for sure. Character portrayal aside though, I wish a bit more time was actually spent on Punisher, which we now only get to see for a portion of the last issue

Well Frank isnt the full Punisher yet.

And I think its pretty fair for him to be different and also take a few issues to try and give the system a chance to work. Hes going through a lot of grief and had to heal from his own gunshot wounds.

Totally, I just didn’t find that particularly interesting reading

#

My mismatch in view also comes a bit from the fact that even before he became the Punisher, Frank was no boy scout either, even ignoring what Aaron did

#

But yeah I did enjoy it, but I do think it could’ve been a lot better

#

Probably also would’ve enjoyed this more if I read Punisher in release order

Yeah maybe so. The comic is pretty sympathetic of Frank since hes the repeated victim here. I thought it was actually great character work: showing that Frank did try and believe in the system before it failed him repeatedly.

Feels like your criticisms come from like, being familiar with the origin which isnt really the comics fault IMO.

Like that comic came out in 1994 before any Jane movie or anything, and its the deepest look we have at the time after the tragedy, I think its important
