Journey Into Mystery (1952) #124 [A Story] -"The Grandeur and the Glory"

This issue of Journey into Mystery delivers one of the most emotionally charged moments of the early Thor run, even if its larger plot elements don’t fully land. The heart of the story is Donald Blake finally revealing the truth of his identity to Jane Foster, that he is Thor. It’s a genuinely well handled scene, tender and sincere, and it gives real weight to Blake’s internal conflict between godhood, duty, and love. Unsurprisingly, this act earns the fury of Odin, adding another layer of tension to Thor’s already strained relationship with his father.

Elsewhere, the issue tries to juggle multiple threads. The Demon’s reign of terror looms in the background, framed as a global threat, but the concept itself feels awkward and underdeveloped, more distracting than compelling. Thor’s hesitation, attempting to live a “normal” life before inevitably responding to cries for help, does feel believable, even if the villain he’s responding to lacks punch. Meanwhile, the arrival of Hercules is teased more than explored, functioning mainly as setup for future conflict rather than a meaningful presence here.

Overall, this is an issue carried by character drama rather than spectacle. The emotional beats land far better than the antagonists, making it engaging but uneven. Strong foundations are laid, but not all of them pay off yet.

Final verdict: 6.45/10.
