Bruce Wayne: Fugitive
Bruce decides Batman is not going to wait around for a trial and escapes prison. He also decides that it’s not worth his time to clear Bruce’s name, so he is just permanently Batman now. Interesting direction, but I felt it could be explored a bit more. The Batman issues for the most part are business as usual, and the only giveaway to all this happening is the people around him being concerned. Meanwhile the rest of the Batfamily is investigating the murder, trying to find evidence towards who did it, even if that really is Bruce. Given that Bruce kinda ignores the situation entirely, this feels less so like an event, and more just like a longer story being sprinkled throughout regular Batman issues. I found the Batman ditching the Bruce identity stuff to be interesting, but it really didn’t sit right with me that he didn’t try to solve the murder to 1) clear Sasha’s name, 2) avenge the death of his ex girlfriend (whom he still loved), and 3) catch the killer. This all ofc presumes that Batman isn’t the killer, which is I guess why they didn’t have him investigate the murder. Still though, feels wrong.
As a whole I enjoyed the book. It was consistently enjoyable across all titles and writers, though it was very clear which issues were written by Brubaker as those issues were clearly of higher quality. That being said, with maybe one or two exceptions I also don’t think there were any particular memorable things here. Solid overall, but nothing all too special.
For the art it’s pretty much the same. None of it bad, none of it great. All of the art here was just good. The covers by Brian Bolland though were very nice.
