Is this issue just set to be ignored because fixing it would be weird, or are pull requests still welcome? From the other attempts they look like they could solve the issue but two people said its not so easy to resolve.

You are welcome to open a PR for it. And yeah, maybe it's not easy, good first issue means "Narrow in scope (but not necessarily easy)"
