Have you looked into the Spirit Weapon system very much? It might be what you're looking to expand upon here

I am currently going through the spirit system, but this suggestion is an aside to that, to exist a long side it, to grow weapons before adding spirits to them.

there is also Erging, sadly what is suggested here for weapon wise, we basically already have.

However! It is a good suggestion for armor, it would fill the gap between armors in mid to end game content, so long as they do NOT make the grind take months or years to perform on NA standards.
